Several individuals were harmed and taken to a hospital in New York City on New Year’s Day after a 44-year-old driver drove on the sidewalk and collided with vehicles while attempting to escape from the police near Madison Square Garden, per the NY Post.
According to an NYPD spokesperson, officers were called to the scene at around 1:34 a.m. on Monday after receiving reports of a potential crime at the intersection of West 33rd Street and 7th Avenue, which is only a few blocks away from the renowned New Year’s Eve celebration in Times Square.
“While conducting the investigation, officers attempted to intervene in a dispute that occurred in a vehicle,”
the spokesperson added.
“The 44-year-old male individual then struck multiple vehicles before fleeing at a high rate of speed westbound onto the sidewalk of 34th Street.”
According to the spokesperson, a 39-year-old woman was
“pinned underneath”
a food truck after being struck by the 44-year-old driver. She was transported to Bellevue Hospital and is currently in stable condition. The driver was apprehended at 34th Street and 9th Avenue and is currently in critical but stable condition. The driver’s name has not been released by the NYPD.
Additionally, six more pedestrians who were injured during the chase were also taken to Bellevue Hospital. Fortunately, all of them are in stable condition. An officer involved in the incident was taken to NYU Langone Medical Center with minor injuries and is in stable condition. The spokesperson emphasized that the investigation is still ongoing.
