One issue about staffing is finding the best person for the job, but retaining the best staff can be more challenging. Usually, the best employees are those who strive to advance the company, can point out errors, and consistently perform at their best. In response, most CEOs shower them with praise, promote them to team leads, assign them the most demanding tasks, and slightly increase their pay. However, this is not necessarily the best way to retain top employees. While the aforementioned actions are good, it is important to consider refining your approach to employee retention. Here’s how, according to HBR.

Rules To Help Retain Your Best Staff

Practice Job Sculpting

Job sculpting is as simple as the words imply. It involves creating a healthy balance so individuals can derive the most fulfillment from their interests and passions. As an executive, you must align your staff with roles tailored to their unique abilities. This may require honing your analytical and psychological skills.

Don’t keep your best staff solely because they comply with your rules. Their years with your company may be wasted if they realize their true passions lie elsewhere. So why not assist them in finding a role that aligns with their innate strengths and interests?

Degrees Don’t Always Guarantee Success

This ties back to job sculpting. Your best staff may excel because they are intelligent, but not necessarily because they are well-suited to their current roles. When retaining your top employees, ensure they have a genuine passion for their work and are not simply fulfilling their parents’ or family’s expectations by staying in the same job. Only then can you be assured of their unwavering commitment to your company.

Promote career development. Don’t hesitate to inquire about your best employees’ aspirations in the field they excel in. Avoid overwhelming them with unnecessary workloads. Instead, allow them to work autonomously and foster a fulfilling career.
