According to The Hollywood Reporter, former ESPN anchor Sage Steele has alleged that the late Barbara Walters physically attacked her backstage on The View in 2014. Steele told Megyn Kelly in a recent interview that Walters elbowed her after a segment where they discussed Steele’s decision not to identify as Black.

Steele said that she was standing near a wall and trash can when Walters backed up towards her, looked at her, and elbowed her. The alleged incident was witnessed by some of the show’s producers and co-host Whoopi Goldberg.  Walters’ estate has denied the allegations, calling them

“impossible to believe and uncharacteristic of Barbara.”

The View did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Steele has since settled her lawsuit against ESPN alleging that she was sidelined for her comments about race, COVID-19 vaccine mandates, and the way that some women dress. She announced on Tuesday that she has

“successfully settled”

the complaint and officially parted ways with the company.  The alleged altercation between Steele and Walters is the latest in a string of controversies involving the former View co-host. In 2012, Walters was accused of making racist remarks about then-President Barack Obama. She denied the allegations.

Walters died in December 2021 at the age of 89.
