Alabama Mayor and Baptist Pastor Takes His Life after Being Outed For Having A Secret Transgender Identity

The mayor of Smiths Station, Alabama, F.L. ‘Bubba’ Copeland, tragically died by suicide, after details about his transgender identity were shared online, reports Radar Online

Copeland was also a Baptist pastor and was well-respected in the community. However, last week, a conservative news site, 1819 News, exposed Copeland’s secret life, sharing photos of him dressed in women’s clothing and makeup, along with explicit erotic fiction.

Before outing Copeland, a reporter from 1819 News, Craig Monger, received a comment from him which stated,

“What I do in private life has nothing to do with what I do in my holy life… Does this have any effect on me being mayor, that I sometimes put on a dress or sometimes put on makeup? Does that have anything to do whatsoever with me being mayor or being a pastor?”

The news was released on his 62nd birthday. The website described his alter ego as a

    “transgender curvy girl”

and made allegations about his online activities involving minors. These revelations sparked both outrage and support within the community, with some questioning the invasion of Copeland’s privacy.

Copeland had never publicly expressed anti-LGBTQ views, despite his affiliation with the Baptist faith, according to the outlet. The Alabama Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, to which his church belongs, stated that the issue was a personal matter between Copeland and his church. The Baptist community’s stance on LGBTQ matters varies, with some advocating for conservative views.

Before his death, Copeland addressed his congregation, apologizing for any embarrassment his actions may have caused. He assured them that his alter ego didn’t impact his religious life and that his wife was aware of his activities. Authorities discovered Copeland’s body on Friday during a welfare check and it was determined that he took his own life with a handgun.

The First Baptist Church of Phenix City has been mourning his loss, symbolized by changing their Facebook profile picture to a black ribbon. His passing has left the community grieving. Church member Dan Elkins told the Daily Mail,

“By no means am I disregarding/discounting accountability – but it must be dispensed with love and care, not scorn and judgment.”

  • Alabama Police Officer Indicted After Fatally Shooting Pregnant Girlfriend And Saying She Committed Suicide

Alabama Police Officer Indicted After Fatally Shooting Pregnant Girlfriend And Saying She Committed Suicide

An Alabama police officer is now facing murder charges after fatally shooting his pregnant girlfriend in the head, and telling dispatchers that she had committed suicide, the New York Post reported.

In January of 2022, Huntsville police officer David McCoy began arguing with his girlfriend and mom-to-be Courtney Spraggins while sitting in her car outside his apartment. According to text messages found on the 29-year-old’s phone, Spraggins wanted to move in with McCoy so that the couple could raise their baby together, but McCoy was already in a relationship with another woman who was living with him. Weeks prior to the shooting, he allegedly told the victim he “needed more time.” When Spraggins asked McCoy what she should do in the meantime, the suspect responded coldly, “A bullet to the head sounds good to me.”

On January 7th, McCoy called the non-emergency police number to see if there were any reports of gunshots fired. He then reported that he had woken up to the sound of a shot from a small-caliber gun. Minutes after, officers arrived to the scene and discovered Spraggins dead from a gunshot wound in the driver’s seat of her vehicle. When investigators question McCoy, he told them “I think I’ve seen her once” and that it seemed like she had committed suicide.

After a photo of him was found inside Spraggins’ vehicle, McCoy’s apartment was searched, and he was brought in for further questioning. Inside, police discovered Spraggins’ phone with the text messages that indicated what led to the incident, and the murder weapon. McCoy also tested positive for gunshot residue.

On March 24th, McCoy was indicted on capital murder charges. The former police officer is now facing multiple charges, including killing a person inside a car, killing a person and her unborn child, and killing a person under 14 (the unborn child). He is scheduled to appear in court on April 4th.

  • Alabama Man Was Denied Water For Over 70 Hours Before Dying In Police Custody From Hypothermia

Alabama Man Was Denied Water For Over 70 Hours Before Dying In Police Custody From Hypothermia

At the end of January, Alabama man Anthony “Tony” Mitchell died from hypothermia while also being denied water for 70 hours while in police custody. Now, his family is suing. According to CBS 42, a lawsuit alleges that Mitchell was denied access to medical and mental health treatment, hit with a stun gun, and repeatedly dragged by corrections officers when he could not walk.

Tony Mitchell was taken to Walker County Jail and spent nearly 14 days there before his death on January 26th. Kept in a cell referred to as “the freezer,” due to its cold temperatures, Mitchell was denied a bunk, a sink, or any source of water. The cell only had a small hole in the floor covered with grating that could be used as a toilet.

In those two weeks, the lawsuit claims that Mitchell had been provided a mat, a blanket, and later had a suicide watch garment, but those were all taken from him within the first few days. He spent the majority of the time naked, and sitting on a bare, concrete floor. He was given three meals a day, usually without water, and was allowed to shower less than half of the days he was in police custody.

On the day of his death, a correctional officer offered him water for the first time within 70 hours, but Mitchell had been too weak from dehydration and hypothermia to sit up and drink it. Medical staff advised authorities to take him to a hospital at around 4:17 A.M., but video footage showed that Mitchell wasn’t transported from the facility until over four and a half hours later. At 1:15 P.M., he was pronounced dead.

“I am not sure what circumstances the patient was held in incarceration, but it is difficult to understand a rectal temperature of 72° F 22° centigrade while someone is incarcerated in jail,” the emergency room’s doctor’s notes state. “The cause of his hypothermia is not clear. . . I do believe that hypothermia was the ultimate cause of his death.”

In a statement released by the Walker County Sheriff’s Office, officials say that Mitchell was alert and conscious as he was rushed to receive medical care. A released surveillance video contradicts those claims, showing that the inmate had to be carried out by multiple staff members. Knowing they were already caught in a massive lie, the lawyer representing the sheriff’s office have yet to respond to the amended complaint.

Bible Teacher At Christian Private School Arrested For Having Sex With Student

An Alabama man who worked as both a Bible teacher and soccer coach has been arrested and charged for having an ongoing sexual relationship with a student, CBS 12 News reported.

On Monday night, concerned parents notified police in Mobile, Alabama that they could not find their 16-year-old daughter. She had told them that she was going to a local Walmart for school supplies, and then was nowhere to be found.

“She hadn’t returned in an hour and a half, so they went out, found her car, but did not find her daughter in the car,” said Lieutenant Mark Bailey of the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office. “They went inside the Walmart, and could not locate their daughter, so they became very concerned.”

Soon after, police spotted the missing teen walking back to her car and questioned her about her previous whereabouts. After speaking with officers, the 16-year-old confessed that she had met her teacher in the Walmart parking lot, drove to a different parking lot, and had sex in his car. She later admitted that they had been engaging in sexual acts for months, usually in his car, but occasionally at his home.

44-year-old Jonathan Sauers, an employee at Christian school The Faith Academy, was arrested and charged with one count of a school employee sex act and one count of a school employee sexual contact with a student under 19. The child sexual predator is currently being held in police custody, and is scheduled to appear in court for his bond hearing on Thursday.

  • Motel Room Where Underaged Girl Was Found With Older Man Had Been Paid For By Parent

Motel Room Where Underaged Girl Was Found With Older Man Had Been Paid For By Parent

On Monday, January 9th, deputies were sent to search an Alabama motel after the Walker County Sheriff’s Office received a call from a “a concerned family member.” According to The Telegraph, the unidentified caller claimed that an underaged relative was at the motel to meet with an older man.

“During the investigation, two underage females were discovered to be in separate rooms, each one with an adult male,” the sheriff’s office reported. “It was determined that a parent of one of the underage females drove the girl to the motel, rented the room, then left the child unattended at some point.”

After learning the identities of the two men in the motel, it was discovered that they were wanted for unrelated charges. The two men, whose names have yet to be released, were then arrested and taken to the Jasper Police Department in Walker County. The parent who dropped off one of the teenaged girls and paid for the motel room was also arrested. They have been charged with endangering the welfare of a child.

“This is a very heartbreaking situation, and thinking about this entire situation will make anyone physically sick- especially another parent,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. “The amount of trauma and mental anguish that these girls have, and will endure in the future, is troubling to say the least.”
