Florida Man Accepts Plea Deal After Infant Dies From Being Forcefully Thrown Against Wall Multiple Times

A Florida man has been sentenced to more than two decades in prison after brutally killing his 2-month-old daughter in 2020, Law And Crime reports.

On December 11th, 2020, infant Scarlet Strahm was taken to an emergency room after her mother saw she was having a seizure. After tests proved that the child was suffering from an internal brain bleed, the child’s father, Steven Michael Strahm, told police that he had accidentally dropped her. Scarlet’s mother had been at work during the time the incident occurred.

The University of Florida Child Protection Team later determined that Scarlet had sustained both “abusive head trauma indicative of physical abuse” and a fractured knee indicative of physical abuse and medical neglect. While being questioned by authorities, Strahm confessed to forcefully throwing the 2-month-old against a wall “4 or 5 times” and intentionally dropping her on her head. Sadly, Scarlet never recovered, and she died two weeks later.

Last month, Strahm pleaded guilty to one count each of second-degree murder and aggravated child abuse as part of a plea deal. In exchange for pleading guilty, prosecutors dropped a child neglect charge. He has since been sentenced to spend 23.5 years in a state correctional facility.

“You broke me. You took the best part of me away and you broke me,” the child’s mother said in a statement. “I never got to hear her giggle. I never got to watch her crawl or hear her first words or watch her take her first steps. She should be two and a half and probably be the most amazing person now but I’ll never know.”

Loni Covington, also known as Miss Loni, was apprehended by the Winter Haven Police Department for allegedly beating an 11-year-old boy with a belt on November 15, 2022, according to FOX 13. The child’s grandmother is the one who reported the assault to authorities after discovering belt marks on the child’s back and side. She took photos of the alleged wounds and gave them to Polk County School Transportation.

Police launched an investigation into the incident and questioned Covington about the matter. She reportedly told officers that the 11-year-old boy would not sit down on the bus after receiving multiple warnings from her, claiming that he talked back to her. Police said that Covington then asked a different student to hand over his belt, but Covington says she used it to

“This is unacceptable behavior for anyone who works with children. We appreciate the Winter Haven Police Department for conducting a thorough investigation and helping us protect our students,”

The Polk County School Board told Fox News.

  • Alaska Republican Argues Child Abuse Deaths Can Be A ‘Benefit to Society’

Alaska Republican Argues Child Abuse Deaths Can Be A ‘Benefit to Society’

Republican Rep. David Eastman is now facing backlash online after commenting on whether the death of abused children would be economically beneficial, Newsweek reported.

During a House Judiciary Committee hearing on adverse childhood experiences, which includes physical and sexual abuse of children and/or living in a household where they witness domestic violence, it was discussed how these events can permanently impact a person’s life.

“In the case where child abuse is fatal, obviously it’s not good for the child, but it’s actually a benefit to society because there aren’t needs for government services and whatnot over the whole course of that child’s life,” Eastman said.

When asked if he was saying that child abuse deaths could “benefit” society, Eastman replied: “I’m talking dollars.” He later continued, saying, “It can be argued, periodically, that it’s actually a cost savings, because that child is not going to need any of those government services that they might otherwise be entitled to receive and need based on growing up in this type of environment.”

Anchorage Democratic Rep. Andrew Gray, who has worked as a prosecutor on child abuse cases, referred to Eastman’s line of questioning as “disturbing.” He also noted that he and his spouse had adopted a child who had faced abuse from their biological parents, and felt that Eastman had implied that abused children were better off dead. ”I would just say for me personally, my child is the greatest joy I’ve ever had- that there is no price tag on that,” Gray said.

Other Republican Representatives came to the defense of Eastman’s comments. Rep. Sarah Vance, who chairs the House Judiciary Committee, praised his “thought process,” claiming his views could be profitable.

“I wished that he asked questions with a little bit more sensitivity to the listeners and how they’re perceived,” Vance explained. “But he’s there on his own accord and only represents himself.”
