A couple from New Jersey is accused of mistreating a teenage girl for seven years by making her live in a dog crate and chaining her in a bathroom. Prosecutors claim Brenda Spencer, 38, and Branndon Mosley, 41, abused the now-18-year-old girl physically, mentally, and sexually since 2018, according to the New York Post.
The victim escaped from the home on Thursday and reported that the abuse started when Spencer pulled her out of school in sixth grade. She resided in a dog crate for a year, then was locked in a bathroom and chained up, and only allowed outside during relative visits. When not in the bathroom, she stayed in a bare room with just a bucket for a toilet.
The victim informed officials that her room had an alarm system to alert Spencer and Mosley if she tried to escape. She endured mental torture and was beaten and sexually abused by Mosley, a SEPTA train conductor, until she escaped last week with a neighbor’s assistance and reported her ordeal. Investigators discovered her living conditions to be very poor.
Detectives also discovered a 13-year-old girl at the house who had been taken out of school years earlier by Spencer. Inside, officials located many dogs, chinchillas, and other animals. The couple was apprehended and charged with kidnapping, aggravated assault, and child endangerment, among other charges. Mosley faces five counts of sexual assault.
