    California Hospital Under Fire After Reportedly Telling Woman’s Family That She Checked Out When She Was Actually Deceased

    Hospital officials in Northern California allegedly informed the family of a woman, 31, that she had checked out, while in fact, she had died and her body was kept in storage for a year. Jessie Marie Peterson, who had Type 1 diabetes, was admitted to Mercy San Juan Medical Center on April 6 last year. Relatives has since filed a lawsuit in Sacramento County Superior Court, claiming negligence and emotional distress for the hospital’s actions regarding her death, according to NBC News.

    After Peterson’s admission, her mother called the hospital to inquire about her, only to be told she had been discharged. The family then reported her missing and searched for her after failing to hear from her.

    “The family searched and searched for Jessie. It was not until April 12, 2024, that the Sacramento County Detective’s Office notified Jessie’s family that she was found deceased at Mercy San Juan Hospital,”

    per the lawsuit.

    The suit added,

    “At this point, Jessie’s body was so decomposed that an open casket funeral was not feasible, and Jessie’s fingerprints were not even obtainable for any keepsake.”

    Due to decomposition, an autopsy couldn’t confirm if medical malpractice contributed to Peterson’s death. The family learned she died on April 8, but the death certificate was signed by Dr. Nadeem Mukhtar an entire year later.

    Her family is seeking $25 million, claiming negligence by the hospital.

    Shane Millan, a 53-year-old U.S. Border Patrol agent, has been charged with four counts for asking women to show their breasts while they were trying to enter the country. Federal prosecutors in New York say he violated their rights by performing unreasonable searches, per USA TODAY.

    Reports say he has been charged with

    “four misdemeanor counts of deprivation of rights under color of law.”

    While processing admissions to the U.S. online, Millan allegedly told three women to show their bare chests on camera and asked a fourth to lift her bra up without removing it.

    Prosecutors stated that Millan made these requests for his own pleasure as he falsely claimed he was performing official searches. After being arraigned in Syracuse, he was released until his trial.

    Man Accused Of Raping LSU Student In Her Dorm Has Reportedly Been Allowed On Campus, Reports Say

    A man accused of raping a student in her LSU dorm last September can return to campus. On Aug. 12, Vishal Bhardwaj, 26, signed a revised protective order allowing his attendance; however, he has to stay at least 100 feet away from the accuser. The state opposed this decision, expressing concerns about safety and the impact on the victim, reports WVLA. 

    Bhardwaj requested the court to change his bond conditions after a hearing by LSU’s Office of Civil Rights and Title IX. His counselors argued that he was found not guilty of the accusations. The incident occurred on Sept. 9, 2023, when officials responded to North Hall at LSU. The woman reported being sexually assaulted that day, stating Bhardwaj raped her for two minutes after she declined consent

    Bhardwaj was apprehended and charged with third-degree rape before being released on bond. He was initially banned from LSU’s campus. A hearing is set for Sept. 5, with trial on Sept. 30, per court documents.

    Connecticut Library Staff Member Charged After With Possession Of Child Pornography, Reports Say

    Lauren Smith, a 45-year-old library staff member from North Branford, Connecticut who resides in Guilford, faces charges of possessing child pornography after police executed a search warrant at her home. The investigation started when officials got a tip in June from an out-of-state law enforcement agency, reports WTNH Hartford. 

    Following this, detectives served the search warrant in July. When they learned about her employment with North Branford, Guilford officials told the town, causing police to stop her from returning to work amid the investigation. An arrest warrant was issued on Friday, and she was charged with first-degree possession of child pornography. She was released on a $100,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Monday.

    “The Town previously has installed safeguards to prevent or detect crimes of this nature,”

    said the town in a penned statement from Police Chief James Lovelace and Town Manager Michael Downes.

     “As of this time, we have not located any violations as it relates to the time this individual was accessing Town databases or internet services,”

    the written statement added. 

    Smith worked part-time at the library as a desk worker and sometimes helped in the children’s library, but officials stated she wasn’t a part of any children’s programming. 

    “The Guilford Police Department asked us not to notify the public until they were prepared to make their arrest, so as not to jeopardize their investigation, which is standard operating procedure,”

    said Downes in the statement.

    39-year-old Jonquetta Winbush was driving with her two children when she suffered from a seizure, causing her car to drive into a pond. Her 12-year-old son, Dwight, is being praised as a hero for swiftly flagging down West Orange police officer Charles Cobb for aid. Body cam footage shows Dwight urgently telling the officer,

    “She’s having a seizure! She’s stuck, she’s in the water!,”

    according to PEOPLE.

    Officer Cobb comforts Dwight, promising to take him to his mother. As they rush to the pond, they see a gray sedan submerged, while Dwight’s 16-year-old sister, Bri-Asia, walks nearby.

    On July 24, while driving with her children, Dwight and Bri-Asia, Winbush suffered from a seizure, causing her car to crash into a pond, as reported by the outlet.

    The woman’s sister, Bevnisha Holman, told ABC News,

    “My nephew was able to swim out of the car to my niece, who then told him to go call for help.” 

    In the pond footage, Officer Cobb rushes to his car for a window punch, while nearby bystanders quickly react. Epifanio Munguia, driving by, stopped to assist with the situation.

    Winbush was rescued from the water unconscious and without a pulse. Officer Cobb performed CPR for several minutes. After three weeks on a ventilator, thankfully, she is now recovering and breathing.

    School Worker Pleads Guilty To Stealing $1.5 Million Worth Of Chicken From School District

    A school worker, Vera Liddell, in the south suburbs of Illinois, has confessed to stealing $1.5 million in food, mostly chicken wings, from schools in Illinois. She was initially charged over a year ago, according to WGN Chicago. 

    Liddell was the director of the food service for the Harvey School District 152. Cook County prosecutors allege she stole large portions of food intended for take-home meals for students learning from home during the pandemic.

    The Cook County State’s Attorney informed WGN Investigates that Liddell pleaded guilty on Friday and received nine years behind bars. Court records indicate she ordered over

    “11,000 cases of chicken wings from the school district’s food”

    supplier and picked them up using a

    “district cargo van,”

    stealing food supplied for students during the pandemic. She was caught amid a “routine mid-year audit.”

    Parents Whose Infant Daughter Died After Consuming Tainted Similac Formula Can Now Sue Manufacturer

    The parents of 13-day-old Willow Jade Dellaquila, who died after consuming contaminated formula, can proceed with their lawsuit against Abbott Nutrition. The bacteria, cronobacter sakazakii, was connected to her death and was discovered in a powdered formula called Similac Total Comfort. The shocking incident occurred back on Nov. 5, 2023. The child suffered from a stroke on the right side of her brain after consuming the formula, per the New York Post. 

    In 2022, Abbott had to close its Sturgis, Michigan facility due to significant contamination discovered amid inspections, following reports of infant deaths and illness linked to their products. 

    Cheyenne Ping, 25, and Christian Dellaquila, 26, the infant’s parents, were given the green light to sue Abbott. This was approved by a judge on Wednesday. 

    Meanwhile, the couple attempted to join a lawsuit with two other families whose children also experienced major brain damage from cronobacter sakazakii in Similac Neosure. However, the judge ordered separate filings.

    Each suit demands a $450,000 compensation for each family. 

    Willow consumed formula from the Sturgis plant, sold at Walmart, even after FDA oversight. While other newborns used formula from an Arizona plant, which also faced backlash. Abbott denies any link to infections.

    “No sealed, distributed product from our facilities has tested positive for Cronobacter sakazakii and we don’t believe these claims have merit,”

    said the company.

    Grace Chang travels about 500 miles weekly, commuting nearly four hours from Arlington, Virginia, to her job in Hell’s Kitchen twice a week, spending around $1,000 monthly. Despite the large monthly bill on transportation, Chang admitted to The New York Post that she loves it.

    The 28-year-old financial analyst said,

    “I’ve always dreamed of working in New York — I love the thrill, the adrenaline of the city… But there are definitely some weeks when I’m, like, ‘Why am I doing this?’”

    “My 10-ride Amtrak pass costs around $790 a month.. I spend another $200 on trains once I’m in the city,”

    said Chang. 

    Although she spends a lot of money on transportation, she revealed what helps her cut down on the cost. She said,

    “On Sunday nights, I meal prep and pack my clothes for the three days I’ll be in New York.” 

    “On Monday, I wake up at 4 a.m., do my makeup, get myself ready, grab my things and go,” she added. 

    Chang’s husband, Andrew, drives her 15 minutes to a D.C. train station for her 5 a.m. commute to Midtown. Her rides are usually calm, allowing time for various tasks, unless interrupted by heatwaves.

    She explained,

    “There have been some severe train delays due to extreme heat… Once, we were stuck on the tracks for three hours, just sitting in Newark, New Jersey.”

    While in the city, Chang stays with her in-laws in northern New Jersey or a friend in Bayside, Queens, for free. She returns to Virginia on Wednesday nights to work remotely for the remainder of the week.

    Louisiana Mayor Resigned and Days Later She Was Arrested For Being Accused Of Raping A Minor

    42-year-old Misty Roberts, the former mayor of DeRidder, Louisiana, was apprehended for third-degree rape merely days after resigning from her position on July 27. She turned herself in to officials on Aug. 1, after alarming allegations that she sexually abused a minor. The Louisiana State Police verified the arrest, which appears to be part of a troubling series of occurrences surrounding her time in office.

    On July 25, Roberts announced she would be away from office from July 27 to Aug. 10, appointing the fire chief as acting mayor. An investigation began the next day. The inquiry was launched after finding

    “allegations of sexual relations with a juvenile,”

    the Louisiana State Police said in a statement. 

    As part of their investigation, LSP interviewed two juveniles, including the one identified as the reported victim, according to the statement released by the authorities.

    “Both juveniles confirmed Roberts had sexual intercourse with one juvenile victim while employed as Mayor,”

    said officials. 

    Roberts resigned on July 27, stating she needed to shift her focus and priorities. She surrendered to officials on Aug. 1, unaware of the charges until the day before she surrendered.

    Father Arrested After Reportedly Tying 15-Year-Old Daughter To Tree For More Than 24 Hours

    In Oklahoma, 40-year-old Johnny James and his girlfriend, 42-year-old Kayla Clark, were apprehended for child abuse after James reportedly tied his 15-year-old daughter to a tree. The couple face charges of abuse and neglect, according to PEOPLE. 

    On July 28, Washington County deputies went to a home in Vera, Oklahoma, about 25 miles north of Tulsa, following a report of child abuse, according to an arrest affidavit obtained by Law & Crime. A woman informed officials that a 15-year-old girl was tied up in the backyard and needed medical attention for a hole in her leg and lesions on her arms. The unnamed bystander reported that the girl had been there for three days, during which she snuck her food. The girl and her relatives were visiting from Texas. When deputies arrived, they discovered the teen sitting on a piece of carpet next to a red shed as well as a chicken coop, leaning over with a bandage on her leg and a

    “ratchet-style tie-down strap around her. “ 

    James allegedly informed police that he tied his daughter to a tree as punishment for her indoor bathroom issues, thinking it would prevent the problem. He also reportedly punished her because she wanted to live with her mother. 

    Clark acknowledged knowing about the situation but claimed she was too

    “frazzled”

    to report James’ actions. 

    James and Clark are in jail in Washington County with a $500,000 bond, awaiting a court date on Aug. 9. The injured teenager was taken to a hospital, and DHS will take custody of her.
