  • NYC Man Who Lost Hid Leg After Being Hit By Train Wins $90M Suit Against MTA

NYC Man Who Lost Hid Leg After Being Hit By Train Wins $90M Suit Against MTA

The MTA may owe $90 million after a train ran over a drunk man on the tracks, severely injuring him. He won a significant lawsuit from the incident that occurred back in 2018. According to the New York Post, the man lost a leg, hip joint, and the majority of his arm following the encounter.

Although the 56-year-old man from Brooklyn fell onto the tracks while drunk, his lawyer argued he deserved the payout since the train driver had enough time to avoid the accident.

    Ira Newman, the attorney said,

“This is a matter of public safety… This accident never would have happened had the train operator timely pulled an emergency brake according to the MTA’s own rules and regulations when seeing people alerting him to someone on the tracks.”

Lamont Powell fell onto the tracks at Broadway Junction subway station on June 30, 2018, after drinking. His lawyer stated the train operator had hundreds of feet to stop before the collision due to him falling to

“the far end of the tracks away from where the trains enter.”

The train operator had passengers on the platform waving to stop the train as it entered the station. A Brazilian witness returned from Brazil to testify about their actions to prevent the accident. An ex-MTA engineer informed the jury that a train going 16 miles per hour requires about 110 feet to stop, while the operator had approximately 360 feet to halt before hitting Powell.

During the trial, the attorney mentioned he should have braked for anything on the tracks. Now, Powell, with no relatives and unable to work, will live in supportive housing.

Almost a year after the incident that caused his injuries, Powell filed a lawsuit against the MTA.

Man Arrested After Posing As Uber Driver and Raping Two Women In Miami, Officials Say

39-year-old Yadir Alejandro Gongora posed as a rideshare driver near popular Miami nightclubs, targeting intoxicated women. He faces charges of sexual battery and kidnapping after his arrest on Saturday

“in connection to two separate cases.”

Back in Aug. 2023, a 22-year-old woman reported being sexually assaulted; however, she couldn’t remember the details, according to the Miami Herald

A woman and her two coworkers enjoyed a night of drinking at Candela bar in Brickell. When her phone died, she lost contact with her friends and decided to leave the bar. Reports say she ended up getting into a car without remembering how she entered. Inside the vehicle, she was raped by one man while another man drove. The outlet added that the woman woke up inside the car five hours later, and one of the men told her to get out at a Publix that was merely two minutes away from the bar.

In May, officials got tips about Gongora, leading to his questioning. He denied knowing the woman but admitted to offering rides from clubs like E11EVEN and Club Space in Miami. Although he claimed to have worked for a rideshare app between 2017 and 2019, he said he later began driving around customers who contacted him directly.

In Sept. 2023, a 21-year-old woman reported being sexually assaulted in a similar way after drinking with friends. She remembered being dropped off near her home but found her belongings were missing. Reports added that she discovered her underwear in her bag.

Gongora came to police attention in May after they

    “received information.”

He had previously faced charges for robbery and sexual battery.

  • Mother Allowed 13-Year-Old Daughter To Sleep In Bed With Her Boyfriend Night Before Teen’s Death, Boyfriend Charged

Mother Allowed 13-Year-Old Daughter To Sleep In Bed With Her Boyfriend Night Before Teen’s Death, Boyfriend Charged

13-year-old Madeline Soto was reported missing on Feb. 26, a mere day after her mother, Jennifer, allowed her to sleep in the bed with Stephan Sterns, her boyfriend. Madeline’s body was discovered on March 1 in Osceola County. Investigators discovered evidence suggesting she was likely dead before school started that day. Traffic cameras captured a limp body, believed to be Madeline’s, in Sterns’ car. Two months later, Sterns was charged with first-degree murder, with the indictment stating the crime occurred between Feb. 25 and 27, according to FOX35.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office released new evidence, including interview recordings with Sterns and Jennifer, body camera footage, and photos, gathered shortly after Madeline was reported missing. The case is now with Kissimmee Police.

On Feb. 27, the day after Madeline was reported missing, a detective interviewed her mother, Jennifer. She stated she last saw Madeline around 11 p.m. on Sunday and heard sounds in the morning, possibly from her roommates. When asked if she saw Madeline leave, Jennifer admitted she was still asleep. She realized Madeline was missing only when she went to pick her up from school that day.

The detective asked Jennifer where Madeline slept that night. Jennifer explained that Madeline slept upstairs with Sterns in another bedroom. She mentioned they were all going to sleep together but she needed rest for her new job so she slept elsewhere.

Madeline frequently slept with her mother, Jennifer, and Sterns, sometimes sharing the same bed. Sterns mentioned that Madeline needed

    “snuggling”

to fall asleep. Reports revealed that even during a short breakup between Sterns and Jennifer in 2023, Sterns continued to sleep at Jennifer’s home with Madeline. A woman Sterns briefly dated found his comments about waking up with Madeline inappropriate, leading to her leaving him.

Sterns was arrested two days after Madeline’s disappearance, facing 60 charges, including sexual battery, after turning over his phone, which had disturbing images of the 13-year-old. He was later charged with murder.

A woman from Woodstock faces over 100 animal cruelty charges after many animals were found in poor and fatal conditions at her home. Officials apprehended 59-year-old Tracy Donovan at an animal shelter, according to WTNH Hartford.

She faces 103 animal cruelty charges after 96 dogs, two cats, two birds, a rabbit, and two goats were taken from her home, with four dogs euthanized due to poor health.

    What officials found?

The arrest warrant said that pictures from the appraisal showed trash and construction debris.

The photos showed dogs in small, dirty cages without food or water. They looked underweight and unclean. In June, someone reported seeing the owner, Donovan, selling these dogs. When officials from the Connecticut Department of Agriculture visited the home, they noticed a strong smell of urine and feces from 50 feet away and confirmed the appraiser’s reports of terrible conditions.

The exotic birds had dehydration, skin infections, feather loss, and beak problems, while the goats were dehydrated and anemic. The warrant noted these issues were due to neglect and lack of care.
