Three Individuals Arrested Twenty Years Later In Murder-for-Hire Plot To Gain Custody Of A Child

Authorities in South Carolina have apprehended three individuals linked to a cold case and an alleged murder-for-hire plot that dates back over twenty years, as reported by the Independent

Kim Burgess, 56, Tonya Burgess, 49, and Mack Hanna, 60, face charges related to the 2004 murder of 19-year-old Lindsey Simmons.

The Lake City Police Department reports that Hanna and Simmons shared a child, and he purportedly paid Kim and Tonya Burgess to murder Simmons in a bid to secure full custody.

Documents acquired by WMBF News indicate that the Burgesses entered Simmons’s apartment and

    “caused her death,”

with the teenager discovered having sustained multiple stab wounds to her neck. This tragic event occurred just six days prior to her 20th birthday. According to the documents, Hanna was reportedly seen leaving the apartment just hours after the murder.

The three individuals were arrested on December 18. Kim and Tonya Burgess both face charges of murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and criminal conspiracy. Hanna is charged with being an accessory after the fact to murder. Additionally, Kim Burgess faces separate charges of homicide by child abuse and aiding and abetting, relating to the death of her newborn over 30 years ago in 1992.

On December 19, all three were denied bond. They are currently being held at the Florence County Detention Center in Effingham, South Carolina. Their arrests were carried out with help from FBI special agents and the United States Marshals Fugitive Task Force.

“All of these investigations are actively being worked and will continue to be worked until convictions have been secured,”

said Lake City Police Chief Patrick Miles.

  • Passenger Furious After Being Forced To Give Up First Class Seat On Delta Flight For A Dog

Passenger Furious After Being Forced To Give Up First Class Seat On Delta Flight For A Dog

A Delta Airlines traveler shared his grievances on Reddit after he was reportedly booted from his first-class seat for a dog, as reported by the Daily Mail. The frequent flyer, known as @ben_bob on Reddit, shared a photo of the dog alongside its owner and detailed his experience on the r/delta forum.

“I got upgraded to first this morning, only to 15 mins later get downgraded (to a worst seat than I previously had) [sic],”

    he wrote.

“I asked the desk agent what was going on and she said ‘something changed’.”

It was at that moment he noticed a gloomy-looking dog occupying the extra legroom seat that was supposed to be his.

“I then board only to see this dog in my first-class seat. And now I’m livid,”

he shared. The unhappy passenger continued to state that he reached out to Delta’s customer service, where an agent informed him that passengers

“may be relocated for service animals’ and ‘there is nothing they can do’.”

“There is no way that dog has spent as much with this airline as I have. What an absolute joke,”

    he added.

“What’s the point of being loyal to this airline anymore, truly. I’ve sat back when others complained about this airline mistreating customers lately and slipping in service levels, but I’m starting to question my allegiance as well.”

As stated on the airline’s website, service animals are prohibited from

“occupy[ing] a seat or encroach upon another customer’s space in any way.”

These specially-trained animals can only sit on their owner’s lap, in the owner’s foot area, or the foot space of an adjacent seat if an extra ticket for the animal has been obtained.

  • Former Housekeeper Allegedly Posed As Holiday Toy Donor To Attack and Kidnap Volunteer

Former Housekeeper Allegedly Posed As Holiday Toy Donor To Attack and Kidnap Volunteer

A woman volunteering for a community holiday toy drive was allegedly kidnapped and assaulted by her former housekeeper, who pretended to be a donor, per the NY Post.

Erin Quinn was helping with the local holiday toy drive in her Southern California neighborhood when she received a text from an unknown number. The message claimed to be from an elderly woman wanting to donate gifts, as reported by KTLA. Quinn agreed to meet, and the con artist, who identified herself as Connie, provided an address for the donation pickup.

On Wednesday, when Quinn arrived at the specified location and approached the house, she received another message stating that someone would bring the toys to her car. However, upon returning to her vehicle, someone was already inside waiting for her. A woman in her backseat grabbed Quinn’s hair and shocked her with a taser, then ordered her to start driving.

About 25 minutes into the ordeal, Quinn, who had already been tased around 30 times, crashed the vehicle. Both women exited the car and started to struggle. In her attempt to defend herself, Quinn managed to bite off part of her assailant’s finger, as reported by KTLA.

”I kicked her as hard as I could,”

    Quinn told the outlet.

“She tried to put her fingers in my mouth, maybe in an attempt to rip my mouth open, and in a complete panic, I bit part of a portion of her finger off in self-defense because I didn’t know what else to do.”

Quinn recounted that it was at that moment she realized her attacker was her former housekeeper, Olga Mendez, who was wearing a blonde wig. She managed to escape only when a bystander, whom she referred to as her

    “hero,”

rushed to her aid. Quinn sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Local authorities have not yet made any arrests.

“I strongly believe that her plan was to kidnap me and take me to Mexico for either ransom or sale,”

    Quinn explained.

“I am completely terrified. I don’t know why she would do this.”

A GoFundMe campaign created for Quinn by a close friend has so far raised $1,890 of its $8,000 target.

  • Anti-Israel QR Codes In NYC Promote ‘Free’ McDonald’s and Starbucks, But Redirect Customers To Disturbing ‘War Crime’ Videos

Anti-Israel QR Codes In NYC Promote ‘Free’ McDonald’s and Starbucks, But Redirect Customers To Disturbing ‘War Crime’ Videos

Fake QR code stickers are appearing throughout New York City, misleading people into thinking they offer discounts and giveaways, but instead, they link to disturbing videos of injured children and anti-Israel messages, as reported by The Post.

This strategy is part of the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement, which advocates for boycotting companies perceived to support Israel. The Post discovered these stickers being placed at various chain restaurants and shops in Midtown this week. One QR code found at a McDonald’s on Sixth Avenue directed users to a flyer accusing the fast-food chain of

    “war crimes”

    and

    “McGenocide”

for supplying meals to the Israel Defense Forces.

“Hitting BDS targets including Starbucks, McDonald’s and Zara across 68 storefronts in Manhattan neighborhoods, activists enticed shoppers with coupon codes offering discounts and freebies,”

a video from the group NJ PalAction explained.

NJ PalAction is urging its social media followers to contribute to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) or the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund (PCRF), both of which have alleged connections to terrorist organizations. Those who can show evidence of their donation will receive PDFs to create the misleading stickers at home, which they can then distribute throughout the city.

New Yorkers are particularly troubled by the possibility of children encountering these messages.

“This is part of a continuing campaign to shock New Yorkers and to disrupt New York with nothing less than Jew hatred,”

said Gerard Filitti, senior counsel at The Lawfare Project and #EndJewHatred.

“They’re spreading disinformation that’s causing real harm,”

he added. Filitti also pointed out the legal concerns surrounding the vandalism of private property and the unauthorized use of intellectual property.

  • Female Banker Files Lawsuit Against PNC Bank For Denying Her Promotion Because She’s Black and A Single Mom

Female Banker Files Lawsuit Against PNC Bank For Denying Her Promotion Because She’s Black and A Single Mom

A woman from the Atlanta area has initiated legal action against PNC Bank, claiming that she was denied a promotion due to being a black, single mother, per WSBTV

In the discrimination lawsuit brought by the employee, Brandie Falice, she alleges that the regional manager who conducted her interview provided several biased reasons for why she was unsuitable for the position, despite her having been with the company for several years.

“I felt discouraged and I felt the time I spent with this company and my efforts to reach my goals in that space were shot down because of something that I love about myself,”

    Falice told WSB-TV.

According to the lawsuit, the regional manager reportedly stated that she was unsuitable for the position because she is black, noting that most of the branch’s customers are white. The interviewer also allegedly raised concerns about Falice’s personal circumstances, suggesting that, as a single mother, she would be unable to work on weekends.

“It was very disrespectful and I questioned my worth altogether because of that,”

    Falice said.

Falice holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from Georgia State University and began working at the bank in 2018. She claims to have been placed on a fast track to management and managed to advance during the COVID-19 pandemic while the bank was undergoing restructuring. After six years with the company, Falice was seeking a higher management role at the bank’s Peachtree Corners branch, located just northeast of Atlanta.

A representative from PNC Bank refuted claims of discrimination against Falice, as reported by WSB-TV.

“We believe Ms. Falice was treated fairly and consistent with our company values, policies, and practices,”

    the statement read.

“PNC does not tolerate discrimination or retaliation and we look forward to presenting the facts in court.”

According to Falice’s LinkedIn profile, she left PNC in April 2024 and has since spent the last nine months working as a senior account executive for a burgeoning IT hardware maintenance and support firm also located in Atlanta.

  • Starbucks Employees Organize Strikes That May Impact Hundreds Of Stores By Christmas Eve, Reports Say

Starbucks Employees Organize Strikes That May Impact Hundreds Of Stores By Christmas Eve, Reports Say

Starbucks employees are set to embark on a five-day strike starting Friday to protest the stalled contract negotiations with the company, according to ABC News. The strikes will kick off in Los Angeles, Chicago, and Seattle, with the potential to expand to hundreds of stores nationwide by Christmas Eve.

Starbucks Workers United, the union representing employees at 535 company-owned U.S. locations since 2021, claims that Starbucks has not fulfilled its commitment made in February to establish a labor agreement this year. The union is also calling on the company to address ongoing legal matters, including numerous unfair labor practice complaints filed with the National Labor Relations Board.

The union highlighted that Starbucks’ new Chairman and CEO Brian Niccol, who took office in September, could earn over $100 million in his first year. However, the company recently proposed an economic package that offers no immediate wage increases for unionized baristas and only a 1.5% increase in subsequent years, according to the union.

“Union baristas know their value, and they’re not going to accept a proposal that doesn’t treat them as true partners,”

said Lynne Fox, president of Workers United.

“In a year when Starbucks invested so many millions in top executive talent, it has failed to present the baristas who make its company run with a viable economic proposal,”

said Fatemeh Alhadjaboodi, a Starbucks barista from Texas and bargaining delegate, in a statement.

However, Starbucks said in a statement

“We are ready to continue negotiations to reach agreements. We need the union to return to the table.”

Starbucks stated that it currently provides pay and benefits — including free college tuition and paid family leave — that amount to $30 per hour for baristas who work a minimum of 20 hours each week.

  • Amazon Employees Launch Largest Strike In Union History Just Days Before Christmas, ‘If Your Package Is Delayed… You Can Blame Amazon’

Amazon Employees Launch Largest Strike In Union History Just Days Before Christmas, ‘If Your Package Is Delayed… You Can Blame Amazon’

Amazon employees are participating in the largest strike in union history, per PEOPLE. The Teamsters announced in a press release that the strike commenced at 6 a.m. EST Thursday, December 19.

This strike kicks off just days before Christmas and the beginning of Hanukkah. Nearly 10,000 Amazon workers have joined the Teamsters to advocate for safer working conditions, increased wages, and better benefits, leaving the delivery of many customers’ packages uncertain.

“If your package is delayed during the holidays, you can blame Amazon’s insatiable greed,”

Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien said in a statement.

“We gave Amazon a clear deadline to come to the table and do right by our members. They ignored it,”

    he added.

“These greedy executives had every chance to show decency and respect for the people who make their obscene profits possible.”

The strike will take place at Amazon facilities in New York, Atlanta, Southern California, San Francisco, and Skokie, Illinois. The labor union claims that Amazon, valued at $2 trillion, has not compensated its workers adequately to meet their basic needs.

In a statement shared by PEOPLE, an Amazon spokesperson accused the Teamsters of unlawfully coercing employees to join their cause. Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel, said,

“The truth is that the Teamsters have actively threatened, intimidated, and attempted to coerce Amazon employees and third-party drivers to join them, which is illegal and is the subject of multiple pending unfair labor practice charges against the union.”

    The spokesperson noted that

    “over the last six years,”

Amazon has raised the starting minimum wage for workers in fulfillment centers and transportation workers in the U.S. by 20%. Additionally, in September, the company raised the average base wage to $22 per hour, which amounts to

    “$29 when factoring in benefits.”

  • Mother Demands Answers After Another Parent Jumps Into Sons Fight: Woman Allegedly Hits Teen In The Face With Gun During Brawl Involving Her Son

Mother Demands Answers After Another Parent Jumps Into Sons Fight: Woman Allegedly Hits Teen In The Face With Gun During Brawl Involving Her Son

A Florida mother was caught on video jumping into her son’s street fight, striking his teenage rival in the face with a gun, per the NY Post

The incident took place on Tuesday afternoon. A group of high school students gathered in the parking lot of a Popeyes in Miami Gardens. Cell phone footage obtained by 7News shows two boys throwing punches, one with his shirt torn. Suddenly, a woman holding a gun intervened and struck the boy with the ripped top in the face.

The woman, now recognized as the mother of one of the teens, has not been arrested for the brazen assault—and the victim’s mother is seeking answers.

“I just want to understand why this woman wasn’t arrested for hitting a minor and having a gun around so many kids,”

    the unidentified woman said.

“That gun could have went off when she hit my son in the face,”

    she added.

“Any innocent bystanders could have gotten hurt.”

She stated that her son, a high school sophomore, is a good kid who plays sports, studies hard and he didn’t deserve to be attacked.

“I’m not happy about my son fighting, but I still don’t feel like he deserves to get hit in the face with a gun,”

    she said.
