  • Multiple Drugs, Including Fentanyl, Found In Bottlenose Dolphins In The Gulf Of Mexico, Scientists Report

Multiple Drugs, Including Fentanyl, Found In Bottlenose Dolphins In The Gulf Of Mexico, Scientists Report

Scientists have found fentanyl and other drugs in many dolphins from the Gulf of Mexico, which could have serious effects on the health of the ocean, according to their findings.

Dara Orbach, an assistant professor at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi’s marine biology program and one of the study’s authors, explained to ABC News that the research started in September 2020. A team of marine biologists was out on a routine survey to check on the dolphin population when they discovered a dead dolphin floating in the water.

They noticed the dolphin had recently died because its tail was still moving. So, they decided to bring the dolphin back to their campus for further examination. Later, when graduate student Makayla Guinn needed tissue samples from dolphins for her hormone research, the scientists were able to collect some blubber from that same dolphin for their study.

The researchers collaborated with biochemist Hussain Abdulla from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, who provided his lab for an analysis of the dolphin tissues. This analysis aimed to identify various chemicals present in the samples. Though they were initially looking for hormones, they unexpectedly discovered thousands of compounds. They focused on three specific substances, including fentanyl, a muscle relaxant, and a sedative, and found traces of all three in the tissues.

For her undergraduate project, Anya Ocampos tested 89 dolphin samples using a mass spectrometer, including 83 from live dolphins in Laguna Madre, near Corpus Christi Bay. Fentanyl was the most commonly found drug, detected in 24 of the samples. Additionally, dolphins don’t drink water, according to Orbach. Instead, they get most of their hydration from the food they eat, which means that the animals they hunt probably have these contaminants in their bodies too.

“This is something that we really need to monitor with time, so that we need to make sure that we’re not seeing increases in fentanyl concentrations,”

    Wittmaack said.

  • Texas Man Claims He Accidentally Shot His Son, Mistaking Him For Intruder, Later Burns The Body

Texas Man Claims He Accidentally Shot His Son, Mistaking Him For Intruder, Later Burns The Body

A father has been charged with fatally shooting his adult son with down syndrome at a home in East Texas, an incident that authorities have described as a

    “bizarre crime,”

    per AP News.

Michael C. Howard, 68, an attorney from Houston, allegedly mistook his 20-year-old son, Mark Randall Howard, for an intruder when he accidentally shot him with a shotgun on Sunday evening. The incident occurred at a residence in Sabine County, located approximately 170 miles northeast of Houston.

According to the Sabine County Sheriff’s Office, Howard did not report the shooting immediately. Instead, he used a tractor backhoe to transport his son’s body about 2 miles away to a remote area on his expansive 2,500-acre property. There, he placed Mark’s body on a wood trash pile and attempted to cremate it. It was not until Monday afternoon—approximately 17 hours after the shooting—that Howard contacted the sheriff’s office to report the incident.

Deputies discovered body parts and bones in the trash pile and sent them to the Jefferson County medical examiner’s office. Michael Howard told investigators that the incident was a

    “horrible accident,”

    claiming he

“cremated his son in accordance with what he felt his son would have wanted.”

Mark Howard, who had Down syndrome, was high-functioning and employed. Two days before the shooting, authorities responded to a theft of a large mower and trailer made by Michael Howard. Deputy J.P. MacDonough did not say if this theft affected Howard’s view of his son as an intruder.

Howard remains in jail in Sabine County on a $20 million bond, facing charges of murder and tampering with evidence.

  • Bullies Sneak Into ICU To Take Photos Of 12-Year-Old Girl Who Was Driven To Attempt Suicide, Lawsuit Reveals

Bullies Sneak Into ICU To Take Photos Of 12-Year-Old Girl Who Was Driven To Attempt Suicide, Lawsuit Reveals

A heartbroken mother is taking legal action against her daughter’s school district and nine staff members, alleging negligence in their duty to protect her daughter from years of relentless torment and bullying that ultimately led to a suicide attempt. The lawsuit, reported by the NY Post, claims that the bullies even went so far as to sneak into an ICU to take photos of the child, further harassing her on social media.

Kelaia Turner, just 14, was a student at Dr. Phinnize J. Fisher Middle School in Greenville, South Carolina. Her mother, Ty Turner, says that her daughter endured both verbal and physical abuse from five classmates since 2021. The bullies reportedly taunted Kelaia by calling her a

    “roach”

    and saying she looked

    “like a man”

after she wore her natural hair. Allegedly, Kelaia’s teacher, Olivia Bennett, participated in the ridicule, responding to the bullies’ taunts by asking,

    “Where’s the roach?”

    when Kelaia was present.

The situation escalated in 2022 when Kelaia fought back against one of her bullies. The lawsuit claims school officials suspended Kelaia but not her tormentor. Feeling hopeless, the 12-year-old attempted suicide in 2023, resulting in severe brain damage after being without oxygen for 8 minutes before paramedics revived her. She remained in a coma for weeks.

While Kelaia was in the ICU, one of the bullies allegedly took photos of her and posted them on social media, spreading false rumors about her injuries. Kelaia’s mother, Ty Turner, is seeking justice, blaming the district for failing to protect her daughter and allowing the bullying to continue for a year and a half.

The lawsuit demands compensation from the district and faculty members to cover Kelaia’s medical expenses, psychiatric care, special education needs, lost wages for her parents while they cared for her, life care costs, disability support, psychological injuries, emotional distress, and loss of enjoyment of life.
