A Texas dog groomer is accused of killing a Yorkie named Sugar by hitting her in the stomach and grabbing her by the neck, claiming that the dog was displaying aggression, per the NY Post.

The suspect, Benjamin Aguilar, 39, has been charged with cruelty to animals resulting in death following an incident at Kanino Dog Grooming in Brownsville on Christmas Eve, as reported by ValleyCentral. The owner of Sugar informed the police that he had dropped off the pup for a haircut and received a call from Aguilar shortly afterward, stating that she had fainted.

In response, the owner requested to view the surveillance footage, which allegedly showed Aguilar striking the dog’s belly and grabbing her neck, according to Brownsville law enforcement sources cited by the outlet. Aguilar reportedly admitted to officers that he used excessive force, explaining that he did so in an attempt to

“maintain control”

due to the dog’s

“aggressive”

behavior.

Brownsville Animal Control promptly responded to the situation and reviewed the video evidence.

“Upon review of the footage, Animal Control Officers concluded that Aguilar used excessive force while handling the victim’s dog,”

police said.

On Monday, Aguilar was taken into custody and brought to the city jail. During his arraignment, he was granted a bond of $8,000.
