Angel Hernandez, who is described by loved ones as a talented athlete who excelled in various sports, collapsed after finishing first in a three-mile race. Despite receiving immediate medical attention, he unfortunately did not survive.

The cause of his death remains unknown at this time, as neither the Tarrant County Medical Examiner nor the Eagle Mountain-Saginaw school district has provided any public statements.

Hernandez’s collapse occurred unexpectedly, as he displayed no signs of illness before the race, reports reveal. Hernandez’s teammates witnessed the teen fall twice and carried him to a water station, according to KENS, a local CBS affiliate in San Antonio. The news of Hernandez’s passing was delivered to his classmates by teachers at Chisholm Trail High School.

Hernandez was later honored as

“athlete of the week,”

at his high school.

“Thank you, Angel, for all your hard work and determination,”

cross country coach Joseph Gifford said in a statement.

“You will be extremely missed.”
