Victoria Monét can now brag about being a Grammy winner; however, she revealed that she once tried to quit music. The singer wasn’t sure her talent would be recognized. In a Variety-led interview, she also confessed her struggle with her sexuality. Here’s more.

Victoria Monét Considered Quitting Music

The talent was there, but it was not making the impact she believed it could. She was barely admired or given the nod by the big players in the music industry. She told a Variety interviewer:

“At the time, I questioned it so much: Like, what is it about me that’s so lackluster? Why aren’t people seeing me? It was even to the point where I would sing demos and try to sound really great so rappers would keep me on the hook.”

While the doubt made her reconsider following her passion, Victoria Monét has remained thankful it was present. Instead of giving up through the tough times, she grew resilient to her purpose.
In her words:

“So it’s all a part of why I think things are coming to fruition now: It’s just time. It’s almost like, ‘Alright, girl — you didn’t give up. We’re going to give you something.”

Monét Wasn’t Bold Enough to Come Out as Bisexual

Even though her lifelong dream was to sing to an audience and be appreciated, Victoria Monét wasn’t entirely true to herself. She feared being seen the way she truly was. According to her, it was mainly society’s fault. People had given her sexuality a negative feel. Apart from what society thought, Monét could not unburden herself from the race and gender factor.

“Being picturesque, straight… It almost felt like you didn’t want to add any more weight to your ankles trying to win a race. It’s like, you’re already a woman, you’re already Black — you’d better pick a struggle,” she shared.

While Monét isn’t big on sharing her feelings by talking, she prefers to do so through her music. One of these talks includes speaking her truth about sexuality.
