According to Michigan State Police Lt. Rene Gonzalez, law enforcement officials were present at the Genoa Township store on Saturday when a clerk alerted them about a woman who had filled her cart with over $700 worth of merchandise and swiftly passed through the self-checkout.

Michigan State Police Lt. Rene Gonzalez told Fox2 Detroit that the event is organized by police officers who team up with children from families facing financial hardship during the holiday season.

“We bring children that might otherwise not have a good Christmas get to come to the store,”

the lieutenant said.

“They get $100, sometimes a $150 gift card to go and shop for themselves with your family.”

According to police, a 62-year-old woman seen it as an opportunity to shoplift groceries and clothes while officers and children were shopping. A trooper noticed her loading the stolen items into her car, which was conveniently parked next to a police cruiser. The woman was arrested and taken to the Livingston County Jail. Although her identity has not been disclosed, she has bonded out but will be charged with retail fraud.
