A tragic incident occurred in Houston when a 1-year-old girl lost her life after being struck by an Uber driver, according to the Associated Press.
The driver, who had just dropped off the girl’s family at their apartment complex did not notice her in front of his car as he drove away, reports note. In response, the family members of the girl immediately pulled the driver out of his vehicle and physically attacked him.
“It’s just an unfortunate tragedy at this point,”
said sheriff’s office Lt. K. Benoit.
According to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, the driver believed that his path was clear after dropping off the girl and her family. However, as he continued driving, he accidentally struck the girl and she was dragged for a short distance. Surveillance video shows the girl walking alone in front of the car just before the collision occurred.
“We as parents, relatives, custodians of children, we have to just be a lot more alert, hold their hands, guide them to a safe place, and then watch the driver pull away,”
Benoit said.
The driver was taken to a hospital and received medical treatment for injuries that were not life-threatening, as reported by Gonzalez. The investigation is ongoing, and at this time, no charges have been filed.
