A woman in Tennessee, Travonsha Ferguson, is suing Walgreens after an employee shot her multiple times in the parking lot, suspecting her of shoplifting. The incident that occurred last year in April left her in critical condition, per the New York Post.

The Nashville Walgreens worker, Mitarius Boyd, was informed by another staffer that two women, including a woman who was 7 months pregnant at the time, were allegedly stealing from the store. He witnessed them putting items in a cart and bag, recorded them, and followed as they fled the facility without paying.

Boyd informed officials that he approached the women as they loaded the stolen items into their car. According to Ferguson’s lawsuit, Boyd confronted them aggressively without identifying himself as a worker. Ferguson sprayed Boyd with mace out of fear for her and her baby’s safety. In response, Boyd shot Ferguson numerous times, causing serious injuries.

The employee confessed to using the firearm. He claimed that he wasn’t sure if they had a gun.

Ferguson was then taken to the hospital in critical condition and had an emergency C-section. She suffered internal injuries and now needs a colostomy bag to survive. Her baby spent weeks in the NICU and is at risk of long-term disabilities. Ferguson’s lawyer told FOX Business that she now faces ongoing health issues. Her attorney claimed that Ferguson’s premature baby has a serious heart defect that will need continuous medical attention.

The Walgreens worker was fired following the incident and has fully cooperated with officials.
