Dwayne Johnson has stated the importance of his role as Kerr in A24’s The Smashing Machine. The star actor says he wants to star in movies that have more substance and humanity. While acknowledging the necessity of major blockbuster films, he emphasized the need to develop films that address grief and struggle.
“Benny Safdie wants to create and continues to push the envelope when it comes to stories that are raw and real characters that are authentic and at times uncomfortable and arresting. I am at a point in my career where I want to push myself in ways that I’ve not pushed myself in the past. I’m at a point in my career where I want to make films that matter, that explore humanity, and explore struggle and pain”.
Given his reputation for box office successes, Johnson’s The Smashing Machine represents a significant bat shift. More realistic storylines will enhance his acting skills.
The film is produced by Seven Bucks Production, distributed by A24, and directed by Benny Safdie
