The end of the program’s 16-year absence from episodic television after its cancellation in 1989 began in 2005 after the creation of the first series with the episode “Rose”. This was the first new televised Doctor Who story since the broadcast of the previous 1996 story.

The show portrays the adventures of an eccentric and mysterious time lord from the race whose home planet is Gallifrey, as he journeys through time and space with his Time Machine, he is known as The Doctor. His machine, the Tardis, appears to be a blue 1950s British police box from its exterior.

He travels through time with the help of his companions, exploring time and space while facing a variety of enemies, saving entire civilizations, rewriting wrongs, and assisting the people who need help. The Doctor is notorious for regeneration into a new form after certain periods.

The plan for the new series involved having each episode as a standalone story with no serials, unlike the series’ classic era that ended in 1989. When the series premiered, it garnered 10.81 million viewers after the broadcast of the premiere episode. After its release it was described as “well received”, by both critics and fans alike.
