After receiving the blessing from Michael’s estate to honor his memory through the film, director Antoine Fuqua and producer Graham King have collaborated with GK Films.

When news of the biopic broke in 2022, Michael’s mother, Katherine, expressed how honored they felt to have this opportunity.

“Ever since Michael was little, as a member of The Jackson 5, he loved the magic of cinema. As a family, we are honored to see our life story come alive on the big screen,” she detailed.

Indeed, the producers are determined to deliver nothing but the best, so it comes as no surprise that they have been thoughtful in the casting process. Michael’s nephew, Jaafar, who bears a striking resemblance to the late icon, has been chosen for the lead role. Colman Domingo will be mentoring Jaafar onscreen, portraying Joe Jackson in ‘Michael’.

Speaking about the selection, Graham and Antoine expressed their confidence in the rising star. According to Graham, only “a few actors possess Colman’s screen presence and force of will. We are incredibly fortunate to have an actor of his undeniable talent portraying Joe Jackson on screen. We couldn’t be more excited to have him join us on this journey.”

“Colman has incredible range – he immerses himself in his characters and understands their true essence and motivations,” added Antoine.

Simultaneously, it is with great honor and joy that Colman takes on the role of Joe. In his own words:

“I am excited to be a part of a film that explores both the complex soul of the legendary Michael Jackson and his impact on music and culture as a global icon.”

According to Deadline, the onscreen star revealed that everyone involved is already working hard to bring the film to life in 2025. Jaafar is fully committed to his role and embodies “Michael’s essence.” Colman added that Michael’s nephew is dedicated to the biopic and is putting in a lot of effort.
