A prisoner who managed to flee from the Kauai Community Correctional Center in Hawaii was struck by a vehicle in a hit-and-run incident shortly after his escape, reports Fox News. The inmate, identified as Matthew J. Ornellas Jr., escaped around 1 a.m., according to the Hawaii Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

Moments later, while running along Kuhio Highway, he was hit by a vehicle. Correctional officers discovered Ornellas approximately 100 yards from the jail, where he suffered serious injuries and was hospitalized.

Currently, he remains in serious condition and under police custody.

The driver of the vehicle fled the scene before authorities arrived, and a search is underway to locate them. Ornellas had escaped by scaling a fence topped with razor wire. He was serving a sentence for the promotion of dangerous drugs, as stated by the Hawaii Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation spokesperson, Rosemarie Bernardo.

According to their website,

“Hawaii’s correctional facilities are aging. This hinders the Department of Corrections & Rehabilitation’s ability to carry out our vision. Ongoing investment is critical.”
