The author of the novel, Rumaan Alam, commends the movie version of Leave the World Behind saying that its ending, which is a homage to the TV show – Friends, strikes the right chords. The film takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where Rosie, a runaway daughter, discovers a power generator that enables her to watch the Friends series finale through a DVD player.

Alam enjoys the witty and self-critical turn towards the end of the film demonstrating the significance of television’s influence as a medium and on the characters he thinks it is a no laughing matter, but reminding people that art can heal.

The author relishes the audience’s mixed reactions to the end, as some laugh, others cry, and still more ask: is the opera over? Leave The World Behind Is a film in which a group of strangers, led by a woman named Annie played by Julia Roberts, have no choice but to come together to survive a doomsday event.

Alam admires the subtleness of the film’s vagueness on many issues and refusal to tie the plots in a neat package, which he deems appropriate for the viewers. Director Sam Esmail does justice to the story by being faithful to the book, and he would be happy if it does make such an impact as it did with him. You can watch Leave the World Behind on Netflix and buy the book in various shops.
