This Tuesday, Jason Derulo and his team were slammed with a sexual harassment lawsuit by his former label signee, Emaza Gibson, at the Los Angeles Superior Court. According to court documents obtained by USA TODAY, the ‘betrayed’ singer claimed the “Whatcha Say” singer dropped her for turning down his sexual advances. Gibson also blames Derulo’s manager, Frank Harris, for ignoring her complaints.
Seven concerns were raised by the singer, who was signed to Derulo’s Atlantic Records Imprint Future History in August 2021. The claims include sexual harassment, quid quo pro-sexual harassment, intimidation & violence, retaliation, failure to remedy harassment, and breach of contract and good faith.
Jason Derulo’s Former Signee Emaza Gibson Accuses Him of Quid Quo Pro Sexual Harassment
According to Emaza Gibson’s claims, Jason Derulo demanded sex from her before fulfilling his part of their agreement. The filing further revealed that Derulo preached participating in “goat skin and fish scales” to Gibson. It’s a practice implying that if the singer wants to succeed in the industry, she must give sex in return.
Gibson disclosed that she was sure about Derulo’s intention when she met another female artist in November 2021. Like Gibson, Rosa was present for a meeting with the record label executives. Despite having never met before, Rosa allegedly told Gibson about Derulo’s plan to sleep with her.
The accuser’s lawsuit also claims that Derulo allegedly ‘charged’ at her for being late to a recording session. Gibson stated that her lateness was due to traffic. According to the filing, there were multiple instances of Derulo and his record label mistreating the singer.
At some point, Emaza Gibson was also forced to arrange and pay for her recording sessions after Jason Derulo allegedly stopped talking to her. Then, in September 2022, her employment with the label was finally terminated.
This situation caused the singer to deal with several health issues, forcing her to seek medical help. Aside from demanding a jury trial, the aggrieved singer seeks compensation for unpaid wages, loss of earnings, and medical expenses.
