‘The Sympathizer’

tells the story of a half-French, half-Vietnamese man who served as a spy for Communist forces during the Vietnam War. The film is based on the 2015 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name by Viet Thanh Nguyen.

This black comedy, historical drama, spy thriller, and war genre film will have you at the edge.

This series is based on the story of the Captain, a North Vietnam plant in the South Vietnamese army.

The captain flees to the United States with his general towards the end of the Vietnam War. While being in the community of South Vietnamese refugees, he continued to spy on the community, reporting to the Viet Cong, struggling with his original loyalty and his new life.

The cast list features Hoa Xuande as the Captain, Fred Nguyen Khan as Bon, Toan Le as the General, Ky Duyen as Madame (the General’s wife), Sandra Oh as Ms. Sofia Mori, and Robert Downey Jr. in several antagonist roles

Casting director Jennifer Venditti opened a worldwide casting call to find a main cast of Vietnamese descent, ultimately hiring Hoa Xuande, Fred Nguyen Khan, Toan Le, Vy Le, and Alan Trong.

Filming took place in Los Angeles and Thailand. Downey shaved his head for the series to save time required to use a bald cap for each of the various characters he portrayed. A significant portion of Downey’s performance was also improvised.
