She Did The Thing: At Long Last, Angela Bassett Wins An Oscar

Despite being known for her work in the film industry since the 1980s, when she made her first appearance as a news reporter in F/X (1986) and joined the Screen Actors Guild, Angela Bassett finally received her first Oscar in 2024.

Angela Bassett was honored with an honorary Oscar at the 2024 Governors Awards in Los Angeles on Tuesday. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Governors Award is a prestigious accolade given to individuals who have shown extraordinary lifetime achievement in their contribution to the motion picture arts and sciences or outstanding service to the Academy.

Although the 65-year-old actor had been previously nominated for an Oscar for her role as Tina Turner in the 1994 film

“What’s Love Got to Do with It,”

this marks her first win. She earned her second nomination for her performance in

“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.”

In addition to her Oscar recognition, Bassett has received numerous awards, including two Golden Globe awards and seven Primetime Emmy Awards. She was also named one of TIME’s 100 most influential people in the world.
