Security footage captured the moment when two young girls were forced to jump from the fifth floor of a Detroit apartment building after their mom’s ex-boyfriend allegedly set it ablaze, per Fox News

The video reveals brave neighbors standing beside a mattress placed on the sidewalk, ready to catch the 8-year-old girl who successfully made the leap. As she looked up at the burning building, her sister and mother remained trapped inside. The 14-year-old sister followed but suffered serious injuries, while firefighters rescued their mother.

The accused, Marion Scruggs, 43, was caught on camera igniting the fire.

“This person tried to kill not just the whole family, but any and everybody that was in that building,”

Detroit Police Chief James White told FOX 2.

Apprehended within 24 hours, Scruggs, with a history of domestic violence, faced charges in 2019 for intentionally setting fire to his girlfriend’s home, resulting in a tragic dog’s death. The connection to the recent apartment fire remains uncertain.

Online records reveal that Scruggs is presently in custody, facing charges of first-degree home invasion, first-degree arson, and assault with intent to murder. Bail has been set at $1 million, and his upcoming court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday.
