A woman from Georgia is facing several charges after reportedly hitting a pedestrian and fleeing the scene, only to crash into a truck moments later. 30-year-old Portia Taylor was apprehended on June 11 for homicide by vehicle, hit and run causing death, and DUI related to the May 18 death of 71-year-old Michael Crabtree, PEOPLE reported.

Atlanta authorities says Taylor was speeding in a 2013 Nissan Altima around 6:26 a.m. after leaving her job at a strip club. • GoFundMe for Teen Who Returned to Burger King Shift Just Hours After Graduation Surges to $130K

GoFundMe for Teen Who Returned to Burger King Shift Just Hours After Graduation Surges to $130K

A woman came across a Georgia teenager, Mykale Baker, working at Burger King just hours after his high school graduation, still wearing his graduation stole and medal. Inspired by their encounter, the woman started a fundraiser that has now surpassed its initial goal by more than double, with donations continuing to rise, as reported by the NY Post.

This remarkable story began when fundraising organizer Maria Mendoza met the 18-year-old during his evening shift at Burger King.

“He was so kind, so polite,”

    Mendoza told the outlet.

“Radiating joy, even after such a big day. His dedication and quiet strength really moved me. I felt called to do something to recognize that.”

Mendoza took action by launching a fundraiser for Baker called

“From Burger King to a College Dream,”

    sharing his story on TikTok

    “without thinking,”

she said. Remarkably, the online campaign reached its goal within just 10 days of its launch. In the initial days, thousands of dollars poured in, but as the touching story spread across social media and news outlets, donations skyrocketed to six figures, far exceeding the $60,000 target. Many of the contributors were strangers, united by their support.

A few days later, Mendoza returned to the restaurant to share the astonishing news of the donations, which had surged to nearly $130,000 by Saturday afternoon. Mykale Baker was brought to tears by the generosity and filled with excitement as he contemplated his dream of pursuing higher education.

    “I feel happy,”

Baker, 18, said in an interview with 11 Alive this week.

“I just want to say thank you to my parents and all the people that see the good in me and believe in me, and donated all that money to me.”

Baker proudly walked across the stage on May 21 during his graduation ceremony at Mills Creek High School. However, he expressed his concerns about what lay ahead after graduation due to financial limitations, although he was hopeful about attending a trade school.

“I’m just grateful I got to do something for him,”

    Mendoza said.

  • Georgia College Student Detained by ICE After Making an Illegal Right Turn, Police Say

Georgia College Student Detained by ICE After Making an Illegal Right Turn, Police Say

A college student from Georgia, who has been in the U.S. since she was 4, has been taken into ICE custody and is now at risk of deportation, all due to a wrong turn, according to Huff Post.

Ximena Arias-Cristobal, 19, a student at Dalton State College, was pulled over by police in Dalton on Monday for turning right despite a “no turn on red” sign, as detailed in a police report obtained by HuffPost. Arias-Cristobal informed the officers that she had an international driver’s license, but she did not have it on her at that time. As a result, the police arrested her for driving without a valid driver’s license and for making an illegal right turn on red.

A representative from the Dalton Police Department explained to HuffPost that officers must arrest anyone driving without a license and do not have the discretion to overlook that violation. After her arrest, Arias-Cristobal was taken to Whitfield County Jail. Arias-Cristobal’s family shared with ABC affiliate WTCV that the young woman is currently being held at Stewart Detention Center alongside her father, Jose Francisco Arias-Tovar.

Arias-Tovar, was arrested two weeks ago for exceeding the speed limit by 19 miles. This facility is located near Columbus, Georgia. The outlet reported that Whitfield County has had a “jail enforcement model” agreement with ICE since June 2020. This allows ICE to identify and take custody of “removable” immigrants detained by state or local law enforcement.

Arias-Tovar’s wife told the outlet that her husband has no criminal history, runs a construction business, and pays taxes.

  • Man Named Speedy Gonzalez Arrested After Stealing Over $20K Worth Of Items From Walmarts Across Georgia

Man Named Speedy Gonzalez Arrested After Stealing Over $20K Worth Of Items From Walmarts Across Georgia

A man named Speedy Gonzalez, 40, was apprehended for allegedly stealing over $20,000 worth of goods from Walmarts in northern #Georgia. He reportedly used a cheap container to hide expensive items at the self-checkout, scanning only the larger, inexpensive item while concealing the smaller, pricier ones inside, according to the New York Post

Kevin Holbrook, a Gainesville Police Lt., said “Nicotine, gum, diabetic strips, you know, high-priced items, although smaller in nature… He would then pick out an item from the shelf, such as a trash can. In one instance, it was a mailbox… Then take all those items, stick it into the box with the larger item, and then take that, pay for it, and walk out of the store.”

Gonzalez’s method let him take more items than he paid for, but officials apprehended him 10 days after a theft in March. He is suspected of over 20 thefts across several Georgia counties. He resides northeast of Atlanta and he was booked into Hall County jail and faces federal charges.

This isn’t Gonzalez’s first rodeo with the law. Back in April 2020, he was caught in Gwinnett County for allegedly stealing checks from a mailbox. He then tried to use those checks to buy $3,000 worth of items at a nearby Home Depot.

  • Man Who Didn’t Know Girlfriend Was Pregnant Discovers Infant in Trash Bag on Their Front Porch

Man Who Didn’t Know Girlfriend Was Pregnant Discovers Infant in Trash Bag on Their Front Porch

A Georgia woman has been charged after allegedly giving birth and leaving her newborn in a trash bag outside her home, per Too Fab. Alaynah Marie Rappuh, 22, was taken into custody on Tuesday, April 1, in Bibb County. She is facing charges including criminal attempt to commit felony murder, reckless abandonment of a child, and first-degree cruelty to children. The sheriff’s office reported that she is being held without bond.

The day prior, deputies were called to the Piedmont Macon Emergency Room regarding a woman experiencing “excessive bleeding,” prompting an investigation into the situation. According to the sheriff, Rappuhn was taken to the hospital by her boyfriend, who noticed her condition at home. Allegedly, as she was leaving, Rappuhn left a trash bag on the back porch. When her boyfriend returned to “retrieve some belongings,” he heard a noise “coming from the bag.” The sheriff stated that he discovered an infant wrapped in towels inside the bag.

    Boyfriend Makes Shocking Discovery

This came as a shock to the boyfriend, as Rappuhn allegedly never told him about her pregnancy or that she had given birth that very day, per the sheriff. She also reportedly did not disclose to anyone at the hospital that she had just given birth when she arrived for treatment. Authorities stated that Rappuhn allegedly gave birth at 4:30 a.m., wrapped the newborn in a towel, and placed him into a trash bag.

The child was taken to the hospital, with the sheriff noting that the baby—a boy—was in critical but stable condition. A man who identified himself as the father, Dimitrios Mason, told WGXA, that he “forgave her already” for what she did. “I’m so sorry that my baby had to go through this. I just love them both and it’s a hard thing for me,” he continued. “I just pray to God, God forgives her…and that my baby has the best life that he could ever have. He started in a trash bag, but I’ll make sure he ends up on top.”

  • Elderly Couple Accused of Stealing Over $1 Million from Deceased Mother’s Pension Fund

Elderly Couple Accused of Stealing Over $1 Million from Deceased Mother’s Pension Fund

An 87-year-old woman from Gwinnett County, Georgia, and her husband have been arrested in connection with an identity theft case. The couple is accused of stealing over $1 million in pension payments from her deceased mother for more than a decade, according to arrest warrants, per WSBTV

Mary Ann Arceneaux, 87, and Ernest Arceneaux, 89, from Snellville, face charges of identity theft fraud and theft by deception following an investigation by the Gwinnett County Police Department’s Financial Electronic Crimes Unit.

Arrest warrants were issued on December 10.

Arceneaux’s mother, who was a retired teacher from California and relocated to Georgia after retiring in 1991, had passed away in June 2010. However, authorities claim the duo never informed the California State Teachers’ Retirement System of her death and allegedly forged documents to make it seem as though she was still alive. The investigation revealed that starting in May 2018, Arceneaux allegedly forged documents and submitted fake proof of life forms to continue receiving her mother’s pension payments.

According to the affidavit, she created “a new proof of life form with [her mother’s] name and forged signature” each year. Investigators claim these documents were notarized and sent to the California State Teachers’ Retirement System to ensure continued payments. The fraudulent activity came to light when officials discovered the mother’s death certificate from 2010 during routine verification checks by retirement system officials. The investigation indicated that the pension payments were deposited into a bank account before being transferred to other accounts linked to Arceneaux.

The total amount allegedly defrauded since 2010 amounting to $1,166,862.69, as stated in the arrest warrants. Both Arceneaux and her husband posted bail following their arrests last week and are now awaiting their trial dates.
