  • Kenosha Police Pepper-Sprayed Black Father and Baby Inside An Applebee’s In Mistaken Arrest

Kenosha Police Pepper-Sprayed Black Father and Baby Inside An Applebee’s In Mistaken Arrest

Police in Kenosha, Wisconsin are under fire after reportedly pepper-spraying a young Black father and his baby at an Applebee’s restaurant, per Insider.

The incident occurred while officers were searching for a hit-and-run suspect, but mistakenly targeted Jermelle English Jr. and his partner Shayna Boyd instead. Video footage shows a bystander pleading for someone to protect the baby as police restrain English.

Charges of disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, obstructing an officer, and possession of marijuana were filed against English and Boyd. The family’s attorney, Kevin O’Connor, has called for an investigation by the Justice Department and for the charges to be dropped. With the experienced trauma that the family has faced they now feel that

“being Black and being out here and having dinner is not safe enough for them,”

O’Connor revealed at a press conference.

    “This was no accident,”

O’Connor said in the press conference.

“What is the first thing that officers are taught? To de-escalate a situation.”

Tanya McLean, executive director of local social justice nonprofit Leaders of Kenosha, criticized the police for not releasing all body camera footage of the incident. The incident, which took place on July 20, coincided with the third anniversary of the police shooting of Jacob Blake, a Black man shot seven times during a traffic stop in Kenosha in 2020. The Kenosha Police Department has not responded to Insider’s requests for comment.

  • Sergeant Suspended Without Pay After Fatally Tossing Cooler at Motorcyclist In NYC

Sergeant Suspended Without Pay After Fatally Tossing Cooler at Motorcyclist In NYC

A tragic incident occurred in the University Heights area of the Bronx when a motorcyclist, involved in a drug bust, crashed and lost his life, ABC News reported. The New York City Police Department (NYPD) reported that the fatal outcome resulted from Sergeant Erik Duran throwing a plastic cooler at the fleeing suspect in an attempt to stop him. As a result, Duran has been suspended without pay while an investigation takes place.

Surveillance footage, examined by the Associated Press, shows the motorcyclist, Eric Duprey, riding on a sidewalk towards a group of individuals. Just before the crash, one person, now reportedly known to be Sergeant Duran, picks up a red cooler and hurls it at the motorcyclist from close range. The impact causes the rider to lose control, leading to a collision with a tree and a metal barricade.

The New York State Attorney General Letitia James’ office, responsible for investigating police-involved deaths, is conducting an inquiry with the full cooperation of the NYPD.

“The NYPD is committed to ensuring that there will be a full, thorough, and transparent investigation of this incident to determine the facts and to take the appropriate steps forward,”

the department said in a statement.

According to a preliminary report, Duprey lost control and struck a parked vehicle after being hit by Duran’s thrown cooler. The incident was first reported by The Daily News.

The 30-year-old man was attempting to evade undercover narcotics officers during a

    “buy-and-bust”

operation, a common police tactic. Duran, who joined the NYPD in 2010 and has received numerous commendations, has previous disciplinary issues, including a substantiated abuse of authority complaint from last year.

  • Pink Sauce Creator Claims She’s Penniless After Being ‘Financially Sabotaged’ by Dave’s Gourmet, Company Insists $120,00 Paid

Pink Sauce Creator Claims She’s Penniless After Being ‘Financially Sabotaged’ by Dave’s Gourmet, Company Insists $120,00 Paid

Controversy surrounds Walmart‘s Pink Sauce, a popular condiment born from TikTok, reports Insider. Created by Chef Pii, also known as Veronica Shaw, the sauce faced safety concerns and complaints about incorrect labels and damaged bottles upon its 2022 launch.

In January, Shaw partnered with Dave’s Gourmet to release a shelf-stable version of the sauce, adhering to FDA guidelines and selling for $8 at Walmart. While sales figures remain undisclosed, TikTokers noticed the sauce quickly going on clearance, although it is now being sold at its original retail price on Walmart’s website.

In a recent TikTok video, Shaw claimed to have sold around 200,000 units. However, she took a different tone online last week, launching a GoFundMe campaign to raise $100,000 for herself. Although she didn’t directly name Dave’s Gourmet, she expressed her belief that a company is attempting to undermine her success.

    “They lied to me,”

she wrote in the GoFundMe description, which has raised just $921 to date.

“They are not paying me and are not being transparent about records. I have tried on multiple occasions to try and come to one accord with them but they refuse to reimburse me for marketing expenses that I spent my own funds towards….They are refusing to pay me the royalty that is owed to me.”

Shaw claimed in her GoFundMe that she is a single mother struggling to provide food and clothes for her children, living on $20 a day and facing eviction. Dave’s Gourmet, when contacted, expressed disagreement with Shaw’s account of the situation.

“We disagree with Ms. Shaw’s allegations,”

    a company spokesperson said.

“Dave’s Gourmet has paid Chef Pii over $120,000 to date and it continues to make all payments as due and on time based upon the terms of the contract.”

    Dave added in a statement,

“We’ve offered to reimburse Ms. Shaw for her lawyer’s time to go over the terms of the agreement and how it relates to the payments that were made to Ms. Shaw… She indicated that she’s open to an amicable resolution of the dispute and the parties are in discussions.”

  • Sex Abuse Victims To Receive R. Kelly’s $520K Universal Music Royalties, Reports Say

Sex Abuse Victims To Receive R. Kelly’s $520K Universal Music Royalties, Reports Say

A New York judge has ruled that the Universal Music Group (UMG) must hand over more than half a million dollars in music royalties belonging to R&B singer R. Kelly to his sex abuse victims, reports the NY Post

The decision by US District Judge Ann Donnelly follows Kelly’s conviction for sexually abusing women, underage girls, and boys over many years, resulting in a 30-year prison sentence. The order requires UMG, Kelly’s music publisher, to pay $520,549 to cover outstanding restitution and fines. The money must be delivered within 10 days, as stated in the court documents per The Post.

As a result of UMG’s agreement, prosecutors have announced that they will drop their attempt to seize over $1.5 million in royalties from Sony. However, the abuse victim involved in Kelly’s child pornography conviction in Chicago is seeking the $4 million in Sony royalties awarded to them. The ‘Bump n’ Grind’ singer still owes more than $42,000 in fines and restitution in that case.

Kelly’s attorney, Jennifer Bonjean, plans to appeal both of his convictions and will seek to have the payments returned to her client.

This ruling comes after Judge Donnelly previously ordered Kelly to surrender nearly $28,000 from his prison inmate account to compensate his victims. The defense had argued against this move, claiming that prosecutors had taken unprecedented actions by freezing all but $500 in Kelly’s account.

In addition to his New York conviction, Kelly was sentenced in February to 20 years in prison in a separate Chicago case. However, most of his time will be served concurrently with his 30-year sentence. Currently, Kelly is incarcerated at the Butner Federal Correctional Complex in North Carolina, having been transferred from a Chicago correctional center in April.

  • African American Students ‘Kindergarten Readiness’ Declines During COVID-19 Pandemic, Studies Show

African American Students ‘Kindergarten Readiness’ Declines During COVID-19 Pandemic, Studies Show

A recent study looked at literacy rates among African Americans and found that about 88% of African American adults in the United States have high literacy skills, which is a bit higher than the national average of 86%, per WordsRated. However, the rate for White Americans is even higher at around 90%.

Thanks to better access to education, improved quality of schools, and government programs to address racial and economic inequalities, African American literacy has increased by 28% since the 1960s.

However, there are still some challenges. Even though African Americans make up only 12.1% of the population, they account for 23% of people with poor literacy skills. And there are gaps in education levels too. In 2019, about 84.2% of African Americans aged 25 and older had a high school diploma or higher. And only about a third of black adults aged 18-24 were enrolled in college.

When it comes to childhood literacy, the disparities are even more noticeable. Black students often have fewer black teachers, and they don’t read as well as white students. There are also differences in access to books at home and participation in advanced classes.

The COVID-19 pandemic has made things even harder. Kindergarten readiness for African American students dropped from 56% before the pandemic to 30% during it. Although there has been some recovery, with readiness increasing to 42%, black students still lag behind the general population.

It’s important to address these disparities and make sure that everyone has the same opportunities for a good education. That way, African American students can succeed in reading and life.

  • San Francisco Overwhelmed By A Catastrophic Surge In Fentanyl Overdose Fatalities, Reports Say

San Francisco Overwhelmed By A Catastrophic Surge In Fentanyl Overdose Fatalities, Reports Say

San Francisco is currently experiencing a devastating surge in drug overdoses, primarily caused by the deadly substance fentanyl, per The Post. According to recent data from the city’s Medical Examiner’s office, out of a total of 71 deaths resulting from drug overdoses last month, a staggering 62 were attributed to fentanyl.

These grim statistics come at a time when San Francisco is grappling with a multitude of issues, including crime, homelessness, and drug abuse, as highlighted in a newly published report that states the city’s government is

    “failing its residents.”

Furthermore, these overdose numbers indicate that San Francisco is on track to surpass the record-breaking 712 overdose deaths recorded in 2020, as reported by the San Francisco Chronicle.

“This tidal wave of fentanyl continues to overwhelm our communities,”

Dr. Grant Colfax, San Francisco health department director, told the newspaper.

“The department recognizes that the tragic, continuing rise of overdose deaths in San Francisco is unacceptable and we want everyone to know we are responding with urgency and with our full attention.”

Colfax, the head of a department in San Francisco, has announced plans to establish 10 additional

    “wellness hubs”

to provide drug users with treatment options. However, this approach has faced criticism following the closure of the controversial $22 million Tenderloin Linkage Center in December.

While city officials claim that the open use of narcotics in these areas was never technically legal, critics remain skeptical. San Francisco health officials are urgently seeking solutions, including making medications like methadone and Narcan more accessible.

Nonetheless, former senior DEA special agent Michael Brown attributes the surge in overdoses to liberal policies in cities across the nation.

“All across the board, you see progressive policies in California, Colorado, Portland, Washington, New York that support harm reduction. That is like trying to train a rattlesnake not to bite you. It’s a political issue at this point and until the politics are resolved, the criminality won’t be resolved either.”

  • Mother Confesses To Submerging Newborn In Bathtub In An Attempt To Conceal Methamphetamine In Baby’s System

Mother Confesses To Submerging Newborn In Bathtub In An Attempt To Conceal Methamphetamine In Baby’s System

In a disturbing case, a 24-year-old mother from Iowa has been sentenced to 50 years in prison for drowning her newborn daughter in a bathtub just minutes after giving birth at home, reports the NY Post

The motive behind this horrifying act was to conceal the fact that the baby had methamphetamine in her system. Taylor Blaha, the mother, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and requested an immediate sentencing. She will have to serve at least 35 years, or 70% of her sentence, before being eligible for parole.

Brandon Thoma, the boyfriend, and father of Blaha’s two children, also admitted guilt for child endangerment leading to death and corpse abuse. They drowned their newborn daughter in a partially filled bathtub to silence her, then disposed of her body in an undisclosed wooded area. Blaha admitted being under the influence of methamphetamine during delivery and was afraid of losing custody of their 2-year-old if child services found out about their drug use.

This tragic series of events began when Blaha informed Thoma of her pregnancy, expressing their original intention of having a family member adopt their second child. Later, evidence was found on their cellphones indicating searches on inducing a miscarriage. Blaha requested methamphetamine from Thoma during labor to alleviate the pain. The newborn, named Kayleen, was born alive, but her parents decided to drown her to avoid raising suspicion from neighbors and child services.

Blaha shared a chilling statement in court, revealing that Thoma encouraged her to continue submerging their baby when she attempted to stop. They kept a portion of the baby’s umbilical cord as a keepsake before swaddling her in garbage bags and placing her in a backpack. Despite extensive searches, Kayleen’s body has not been located.

Initially facing a first-degree murder charge, Blaha ultimately pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of second-degree murder. Thoma, who also faced a first-degree murder charge, reached a plea deal and is awaiting sentencing. The devastating consequences of their actions have left a community in shock and a baby girl’s body still missing.

  • Study Links Screen Time In Infants To Speech and Problem-Solving Delays

Study Links Screen Time In Infants To Speech and Problem-Solving Delays

A new study suggests that excessive screen time, including television, may negatively impact child development, potentially leading to delays in communication, problem-solving, and social skills, reports the NY Post

“Passive screen time, such as mindlessly watching television or videos, may not allow children to practice interactive problem-solving skills,”

according to Dr. Jason Nagata, an associate professor of pediatrics at the University of California, San Francisco, as reported by MedPage Today.

“Screens can disrupt or displace interactions with caregivers and limit opportunities for verbal exchanges, which can impair communication and social skills,”

added Nagata, who was not involved in the study.

“When screen use does not have an interactive or physical component, children are sedentary and may not be able to practice their gross motor skills.”

A study in Japan examined the impact of screen time on child development, involving over 7,000 children aged 1 to 4. Mothers reported the number of hours their children spent using screens. Results revealed that children with up to four hours of screen time per day at age 2 were up to three times more likely to have delayed communication and problem-solving skills.

Those with four or more hours had underdeveloped communication, personal, social, and motor skills. Issues persisted at age 4. Mothers of children with high screen time were often younger, first-time mothers with lower incomes and education levels, and more likely to experience postpartum depression.

However, the study has limitations, including reliance on mothers’ reports and no distinction between educational and entertainment screen time.

“Not all screen time is equal. For instance, watching educational programs or video chatting with family is not the same as passively watching television or fast-paced TikTok videos,”

    said Nagata.

  • Private School Teacher Allegedly Sexually Assaulted Teen In Park, Gifted Him Gun For Birthday

Private School Teacher Allegedly Sexually Assaulted Teen In Park, Gifted Him Gun For Birthday

A private Christian school teacher in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, has been accused of sexually assaulting an eighth-grade student, per the NY Post

The alleged perpetrator, Tyesha Bolden, 34, reportedly had an inappropriate relationship with the boy, which included exchanging over 2,200 text messages, some of which contained explicit content. Bolden has been released on a $2,500 bond after being charged with second-degree child sex assault and providing a dangerous weapon to a child.

According to police, in June, Bolden took the boy to a wooded park, where the assault is said to have occurred. The victim later revealed that he asked Bolden to buy him a Glock 19 handgun, as he felt the need for protection. Shockingly, Bolden not only purchased the gun and ammunition but also gifted it to the teenager for his 14th birthday, along with some books.

The situation came to light when the victim’s parents discovered inappropriate photos, including a topless selfie of Bolden, on their son’s phone. In July, the teen asked Bolden for money and another gun, but she only provided the money. Shortly after, the victim went missing, and it was suspected that he might be staying at Bolden’s residence. Police located him in possession of the same gun his teacher had bought him.

Upon learning of the allegations against Bolden, the school promptly fired her.

If convicted, she could face up to 40 years in prison.
