The story explores the tale of an aspiring pianist and middle school teacher, Joe Gardner as he gets involved in an accident leaving him comatose. He desperately seeks to reunite his body and soul just in time for his big breakout as a jazz musician.

After landing the gig of a lifetime, he finds himself trapped as a disembodied soul heading into an afterlife called the

“Great Beyond”.

Due to his unwillingness to die, he tries to escape but ends up in the

“Great Before”,

A realm where new souls are prepared for life on Earth with guidance from otherworldly counselors.

Mistaken for a mentor during his time in this realm, Joe is assigned to 22, a stubborn soul who has been in the Great Before for thousands of years and hopes to avoid Earth. He seeks to help him find his passion, and he soon discovers what it means to have a soul.

The director Pete Docter describes Soul as being conceived to examine the origins of human personalities and the concept of determinism. The film was first premiered at the London Film Festival on the 11th of October 2020 and subsequently released in December 2020.
