The boat captain whose vessel caught fire near Hart Island in the Bronx faces three charges for operating the boat while intoxicated. The incident occurred on the evening of Saturday, June 7, and resulted in injuries to almost two dozen riders.
Officials noticed that 33-year-old Joshua Brito had watery eyes and smelled strongly of alcohol. He admitted to driving the Carver 35 yacht and claimed he had only “one beer.” Brito said he “picked up a group at World Fair” and mentioned an alleged generator problem he had a couple of days earlier. Social media videos showed the boat engulfed in black smoke while floating in the Long Island Sound.
The NYPD’s Harbor Unit, Aviation, and Drone Team, along with the FDNY and EMS, responded to a yacht fire after 8 p.m. Three people were rescued from the water, while nineteen swam to Hart Island. The cause is unclear. However, Brito had a blood alcohol level of .05 and later pleaded not guilty.
