A South Carolina mayor, George Garner II, 49, sadly, died in a car crash during a police chase just days after his entire police force resigned. The accident occurred on Nov. 26 when his car collided with a truck while being pursued by a deputy on Hwy 34 in Mechanicsville, according to the Independent.
Reports added that he was re-elected for mayor not too long ago.
“The pursuit was not related to any laws being broken,”
the Darlington County Coroner, J Todd Hardee wrote.
“The pursuit was taking place in effort to protect the well-being of Mr Garner.”
Earlier this month, the entire police force of McColl resigned, leaving the town of 1,900 residents without any officers. Chief Bob Hale stated that he stepped down after receiving odd treatment from a local official, according to a statement shared with WPDE.
“For months, I have endured unwarranted and malicious behavior aimed at undermining my integrity and leadership,”
said Chief Hale.
He added,
“These actions have not only affected me personally but have also created a toxic atmosphere that has hindered the department’s ability to function effectively.”
The Darlington County Coroner and SCHP MAIT team are investigating the crash.
Marlboro County 911 wrote on Facebook,
“Our hearts are heavy during this difficult time, and we are keeping everyone affected in our thoughts and prayers. Mayor Garner was truly a remarkable individual. He consistently treated everyone with warmth and respect, and his kindness left a lasting impact on those around him.”
