  • TikTok Sued By 13 States, Accused Of Creating Harmful and Addictive Features That ‘Intentionally Targets Children’

TikTok Sued By 13 States, Accused Of Creating Harmful and Addictive Features That ‘Intentionally Targets Children’

Thirteen U.S. states and the District of Columbia filed new lawsuits against TikTok, claiming that the popular social media platform is harming and not protecting young people, as reported by Reuters.

“TikTok cultivates social media addiction to boost corporate profits,”

California Attorney General Rob Bonta said in a statement. Bonta went on to add that

“TikTok intentionally targets children because they know kids do not yet have the defenses or capacity to create healthy boundaries around addictive content.”

New York Attorney General Letitia James said,

“Young people are struggling with their mental health because of addictive social media platforms like TikTok.”

On Tuesday, TikTok refuted those claims, expressing their disappointment in the states decision to sue

“rather than work with us on constructive solutions to industrywide challenges.”

TikTok has safety features like automatic screen time limits and privacy settings for users under 16, according to the company.

Washington’s lawsuit claimed that TikTok facilitates with the sexual exploitation of underage users, stating that TikTok’s live streaming and virtual currency

“operate like a virtual strip club with no age restrictions.”

Other states like Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Mississippi, New Jersey, North Carolina, Oregon, South Carolina, Vermont, and Washington also filed lawsuits.

TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, is currently battling a U.S. law that could lead to the app being banned in the country.

  • Mega Millions Ticket Price Set To Rise To $5, Offering Larger Jackpots and Better Winning Odds

Mega Millions Ticket Price Set To Rise To $5, Offering Larger Jackpots and Better Winning Odds

Starting next April, Mega Millions tickets will cost $5 instead of $2, according to lottery officials per the NY Post. With this price hike, players will have better odds of winning larger jackpots as part of a major update to the lottery set for April 2025, reports note.

Lottery officials believe that the promise of bigger jackpots will attract more players, even with the higher ticket prices. At this time, the odds of winning the Mega Millions jackpot are about 1 in 302.6 million. In the game’s history, six players have won jackpots over $1 billion, and around 1,200 players have become millionaires. However, fewer people are buying tickets regularly unless there’s a huge jackpot on the line.

“We expect more billion-dollar jackpots than ever before, meaning creating more billionaires and many more millionaires as the jackpots climb, plus this game will continue the important legacy of supporting great causes everywhere Mega Millions is played,”

said Joshua Johnston, director of the Washington Lottery and lead director of the group that oversees Mega Millions.

The extra money from ticket sales will help state lotteries, which use the funds for various government services. This $3 increase is only the second time Mega Millions has raised ticket prices — which are available in 45 states, plus Washington, DC, and the US Virgin Islands. Research shows that many Americans are fine with spending $5 on scratch-offs or lottery tickets, which is similar to or even less than the cost of a coffee from Starbucks, according to Johnston.

One reason for these updates is to make Mega Millions more appealing to players compared to their competitor, Powerball, Johnston mentioned. More details about the changes will be shared in the coming months.

  • 10-Year-Old Boy Arrested For Allegedly Driving Stolen Car Around Playground Full Of Children, Police Say This Isn’t His First Arrest

10-Year-Old Boy Arrested For Allegedly Driving Stolen Car Around Playground Full Of Children, Police Say This Isn’t His First Arrest

A 10-year-old boy has been arrested for driving a stolen car near a playground in Minnesota where kids were playing, per Law & Crime. Minneapolis police shared the news of the boy’s arrest on Friday.

“The boy was booked into the Hennepin County Juvenile Detention Center on Thursday for probable cause 2nd degree assault,”

police said in a statement. The incident took place on Sept. 20 at Nellie Stone Johnson School in north Minneapolis. Police revealed that no one was hurt and that

“no children on the playground were struck by the driver.”

The suspect in question, whose name has not been released due to his age, has reportedly had several run-ins with the law.

“Police records indicate that the 10-year-old boy has at least 30 entries dating back to May 2023,”

    the statement said.

“He has been arrested at least twice before for auto theft related crimes.”

He is also listed as a suspect

“in more than 12 cases that range from auto theft to robbery to assault with a dangerous weapon,”

    as well as

    “runaway type cases,”

the statement says. Surveillance footage from the Minneapolis police shows the stolen car driving on the grass and sidewalk around the playground. It drove by where kids were playing on slides, benches, and climbing equipment three times. School staff can be seen trying to get the children to safety, and a young girl almost stepped into the car’s path but stopped just in time.

    The boy’s family

“is cooperative with police and have asked for help to keep their son or anyone else from being injured or killed,”

according to police chief Brian O’Hara.

“It is unfathomable that a 10-year-old boy has been involved in this level of criminal activity without effective intervention,”

    O’Hara said in the statement.

“Prison is not an acceptable option for a 10-year-old boy. But the adults who can stop this behavior going forward must act now to help this child and his family.”

  • Hurricane Helene Takes The Life Of A Mother and Her Newborn Twins, After Tree Falls On Their Georgia Home

Hurricane Helene Takes The Life Of A Mother and Her Newborn Twins, After Tree Falls On Their Georgia Home

A Georgia woman and her twin sons sadly lost their lives when a tree fell on the roof of their home, per WSBTV. Kobe Williams, 27, had recently told her father that she and her newborn twins were staying at their trailer in Thomson while Hurricane Helene hit the southeast.

Before he ended the call to check in on his other kids, he advised her to take shelter in the bathroom with her one-month-old babies until the storm was over. A few minutes later, she stopped answering her family’s calls. Later that day, one of her brothers went to check on her, carefully avoiding fallen trees and power lines, and it was too hard for him to tell their father what he found.

A large tree fell through the roof, hitting Kobe and causing her to land on her baby sons, Khyzier and Khazmir. Sadly, all three were found dead.

“I’d seen pictures when they were born and pictures every day since, but I hadn’t made it out there yet to meet them,”

Obie Lee Williams told The Associated Press days after the storm ravaged eastern Georgia.

“Now I’ll never get to meet my grandsons. It’s devastating.”

The babies, born on August 20, are the youngest known victims of the storm, which has claimed 200 lives as of Thursday. Other young victims include a 7-year-old girl and a 4-year-old boy from Washington County, Georgia, about 50 miles south.

Kobe, a single mother who recently gave birth to twin boys, told her family that she couldn’t evacuate with such small babies, according to her father. Many of his other 14 children still don’t have power at their homes in Georgia, he said. Some have traveled to Atlanta for shelter, while others have gone to Augusta to be with their father and grieve together. They are waiting for the county coroner to release the bodies and for the roads to be cleared before planning a funeral.

  • Son Of A Junk Dealer Discovers Picasso Painting In His Parent’s Home Worth $6 Million

Son Of A Junk Dealer Discovers Picasso Painting In His Parent’s Home Worth $6 Million

A man found an old painting in his house that turned out to be a Pablo Picasso worth about $6.6 million, per the NY Post. It had been hidden for years because his mother didn’t like it, he claims. Andrea Lo Rosso said his dad, Luigi, who was a junk dealer, discovered the painting while cleaning a cellar in Capri, Italy, in 1962.

“My father was from Capri and would collect junk to sell for next to nothing,”

Lo Rosso’s son Andrea, now 60, said. Even though the painting had Picasso’s signature in the corner, Luigi didn’t know who he was at the time.

“He found the painting before I was even born and he didn’t have a clue who Picasso was,”

    he said.

“He wasn’t a very cultured person… My mother didn’t want to keep it, she kept saying it was horrible,”

    he added.

His wife thought the painting was ugly, but Luigi bought a cheap frame and hung it on the living room wall in Pompeii, where it stayed for decades. After some time, the family asked local experts, including art detective Maurizio Seracini, to help them investigate the painting. Finally, graphologist Cinzia Altieri confirmed that the signature was indeed Picasso’s.

The artwork is believed to have been painted between 1930 and 1936 and is thought to be a portrait of Picasso’s mistress, Dora Maar, with whom he was involved until their breakup in 1945. Picasso created over 14,000 pieces of art before he died in 1973.

Although Luigi passed away before the painting was authenticated, Andrea is determined to. The Picasso Foundation in Malaga, Spain, will make the final decision, but for now, the painting is kept in a vault in Milan. Andrea always suspected it was a real Picasso and would honor his father by proving it.

  • Man Chops Off His Penis With An Axe and Places Severed Pieces In A Jar Of Snow After Consuming ‘Magic Mushrooms,’ Reports Say

Man Chops Off His Penis With An Axe and Places Severed Pieces In A Jar Of Snow After Consuming ‘Magic Mushrooms,’ Reports Say

A man in Austria reportedly cut off his own penis with an axe after consuming a large amount of psychedelic mushrooms, as reported by the NY Post. Fortunately, doctors were able to reattach the organ. The 37-year-old was struggling with depression and alcohol abuse during this episode.

Psychedelic mushrooms contain psilocybin, a substance that can cause hallucinations by affecting serotonin receptors in the brain, reports state. However, this case is the first known instance of Klingsor syndrome connected to psilocybin, which involves self-harm to the genitals by someone in a psychotic state.

The man had reportedly eaten four to five dried mushrooms while alone at his vacation home, leading to a brief psychotic episode in which he used an axe to sever his penis.

He was later found by a resident after wandering away from his home in search of help. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition about five hours after the incident.

Medical professionals noted that he had attempted to stop the bleeding by tying a cloth around his penis and placing the severed parts in a jar of snow. Doctors had to clean the contaminated organ before successfully repairing the tip and a portion of the shaft, although some parts were too damaged to be reattached.
