  • Former Dean, Claudine Gay, Becomes Harvard University’s First Black President and The Second Woman To Lead This Position

Former Dean, Claudine Gay, Becomes Harvard University’s First Black President and The Second Woman To Lead This Position

Harvard University made history on Friday as it officially welcomed Claudine Gay as its first Black president. Gay is also the second woman to hold this esteemed position at the university, reports CNN

“I stand before you on this stage with the weight and the honor of being a first,”

Gay said during the inauguration ceremony in Cambridge. Since its establishment in 1640, Harvard University has seen 29 presidents before Claudine Gay assumed office as its 30th president. During her inaugural speech, Gay outlined her vision for the Ivy League institution.

“I stand before you today humbled by the prospect of leading Harvard, emboldened by the trust you have placed in me, and energized by your own commitment to this singular institution and to the common cause of higher education,”

    she asserted.

“The courage of this University — our resolve, against all odds — to question the world as it is and imagine and make a better one: It is what Harvard was made to do,”

    she added.

During a Friday afternoon speech, Maura Healey, the Governor of Massachusetts and an alumni of Harvard University, recognized the importance of Claudine Gay’s presidency.

“President Gay, your presidency is truly historic,”

    Healy said.

“You have my admiration and support.”

The Harvard Corporation and the University’s principal governing board said they had performed an intensive search before  electing Gay.

“She will provide Harvard with the strong moral compass necessary to lead this great university. The search committee has made an inspired choice for our 30th president. Under Claudine Gay’s leadership, Harvard’s future is very bright.”

After completing her Ph.D. in government at Harvard in 1998, Gay became a member of the Harvard faculty in 2006. Her exceptional dissertation in political science earned her the Toppan Prize, as stated by the Harvard Gazette. Prior to her current role, Gay held the position of Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. Additionally, she is a leading scholar of political behavior and has played a key role in establishing the Inequality in America Initiative launched in 2017, which aims to explore social and economic inequality through a multidisciplinary approach.

  • Navy Veteran Fatally Attacks ‘Witch’ Sister, Citing Her True-Crime Fascination, Claims to Have ‘Saved Mother’s Life’

Navy Veteran Fatally Attacks ‘Witch’ Sister, Citing Her True-Crime Fascination, Claims to Have ‘Saved Mother’s Life’

A Navy veteran named Anthony Dibella has been sentenced to 18 years to life in prison for fatally stabbing his sister, Paoli, with a bayonet blade and awl, according to FOX News. Dibella claimed that his sister’s fascination with true-crime content led him to believe she intended to kill their mother.

On April 28, 2022, Dibella called 911 dispatchers, telling them that his sister

“Wanda Paoli is being killed, she is a witch killed with a knife and awl, and is currently on the porch”

of their town of Lyme home, per court documents. When first responders arrived at the scene they discovered Paoli’s lifeless body with multiple stab wounds to her head, neck, and face.

Dibella told the court that he suffers from schizoaffective and bipolar disorders. He expressed his hope for treatment at a VA hospital instead of imprisonment. Paoli’s sons, Shawn and Josh, wrote that they hope Dibella

“rots in prison with no chance of ever getting out for what he has done”

    and that their uncle is

    “nothing to [them] now”

in their statement shared at the Sept. 20 sentencing hearing.

“He selfishly and violently took her life and has destroyed our family,”

    the statement read.

“Every day is difficult, and no one can ever understand the physiological impact this senseless tragedy has had… on the lives of our entire family because our mother is no longer here with us. I cannot even put into words how much she is missed.”

    Dibella admitted that he

    “stopped all [his] psychotropic medications”

    after

    “attending a healing church service”

in 2019. Despite his actions, Dibella tried to rationalize the murder based on his sister’s interests and a minor bruise on their mother’s hand. The veteran told the court,

“I believe without a shadow of a doubt that I saved my mother’s life that day,”

    Dibella concluded.

  • Sea Lion Breaks Free From Central Park Zoo, Explores Flooded New York City

Sea Lion Breaks Free From Central Park Zoo, Explores Flooded New York City

Earlier this week, New York City was hit with severe flooding, prompting Governor Kathy Hochul to declare a state of emergency.

In the midst of the flooding, a sea lion also managed to escape from Central Park Zoo, Insider reported. However, the Wildlife Conservation Society ensured that the sea lion never left the zoo’s perimeter and was closely monitored by zoo staff during its brief adventure before returning safely.

During the flood, subway stations were immersed in water. The flooding even caused closures to Terminal A at LaGuardia Airport and the shutting down of FDR Drive in Manhattan, along with other road closures and transportation disruptions. The increasing threat of rising sea levels in New York and other areas has made it more likely for excessive rainfall to cause sudden and extreme flooding, reports note.

Unfortunately, this is not the first time that floods and natural disasters have resulted in zoo animals escaping from their enclosures.

In June 2015, heavy floodwaters destroyed much of a zoo in Tbilisi, Georgia, leading to the escape of numerous animals including lions, tigers, bears, and a hippopotamus. Tragically, the flood also claimed the lives of at least 12 people.

Authorities had to take drastic measures, such as tranquilizing a hippo that was wandering down one of Tbilisi’s main streets, and shooting six wolves to protect public safety. Several other animals also drowned during the flooding.

These incidents serve as reminders of the urgent need to address the consequences of climate change and the potential dangers it presents to both human and animal lives.

The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office received a complaint about an inappropriate relationship between the teacher and the student, prompting an investigation. Sheriff Daniel Edwards acknowledged the investigation but withheld further details due to the student’s age.

“While we cannot share specific details regarding the investigation, we can confirm that the allegations were dealt with promptly, and the investigation process has been rigorous and thorough,”

    Edwards told WVUE.

“This type of investigation is time-consuming and is being handled with great care. Under no circumstances will we be rushed for closure,”

    he added.

No arrests have been made, police said.

According to WDSU, the Tangipahoa Parish School System has confirmed that the teacher involved in the alleged improper relationship has resigned from her position.

“The Tangipahoa Parish System has been made aware of allegations that involve a former employee of the District,”

TPSS Superintendent Melissa M. Stilley told The Post in a statement.

  • Mother Acquitted Of Serious Charges After allegedly Hunting Down Son’s Bullies With A Bat and Running Over Teen Twice, Prosecutors Alleged

Mother Acquitted Of Serious Charges After allegedly Hunting Down Son’s Bullies With A Bat and Running Over Teen Twice, Prosecutors Alleged

A Long Island mother, Jennifer Nelson, was recently acquitted of attempted murder and assault charges after taking action against her son’s bullies, reports Law & Crime.

Nelson’s trial, starting in September, ended with her acquittal on Tuesday. However, she got convicted for fleeing an accident scene, after running over a 15-year-old boy twice, which resulted in serious injuries to the teen.

Nelson faced accusations of confronting bullies at William Floyd High School in Mastic Beach with a bat and knife. Suffolk DA Raymond A. Tierney criticized Nelson for taking matters into her own hands.

“Citizens cannot take the law into their own hands, and should instead work with law enforcement and my office to seek justice in every case,”

Tierney told the outlet when describing the second-degree attempted murder charge.

Nelson suspected that the 15-year-old was involved in bullying her son and a part of the group that stole his sneakers and AirPods. Charges related to the robbery were only filed against two other teenagers.

According to the DA’s office, Nelson went to the Dunkin’ Donuts parking lot, to allegedly confront them.

“Once [Nelson arrived] in the parking lot, she threatened a group of students while brandishing a knife and a small bat. During this incident, the victim left the parking lot and walked across the street to the parking lot of Manhattan Bagel,”

they added. When the 15-year-old walked away, Nelson tailed him with her vehicle

“at a high rate of speed, and drove directly at the victim who was standing in the parking lot,”

running over him twice, prosecutors stated.

Nelson traded in her leased Honda SUV on the same day as the incident, despite the lease not having expired, as an effort to hide the vehicle used in the offense, prosecutors alleged. Nelson told Newsday that she is relieved by the

    “not guilty”

    verdict.

“I don’t know. I’m just happy with the outcome,”

    she said.

“This has been a lot, you know, on me, my son, just everybody involved, it’s been a lot,” she added.

  • Black Man’s Relationship to Multiracial Children Questioned on American Airlines Flight Spurs Investigation

Black Man’s Relationship to Multiracial Children Questioned on American Airlines Flight Spurs Investigation

A passenger flying with American Airlines says he was greeted by police upon arrival in Los Angeles after a flight attendant expressed worries about the safety of his children and questioned their relation to him, per Insider

David Ryan Harris, who is Black, traveled from Atlanta to Los Angeles on September 15 with his two multiracial children. According to Harris, the flight attendant grew suspicious when his 7-year-old son, who he described as

    “rather reserved,”

did not respond when she attempted to initiate a conversation and ask for his name.

“Upon our arrival in Los Angeles, we were met at the top of the jetway by an AA employee and four police officers,”

Harris said in an Instagram video documenting the incident.

“Apparently, a flight attendant had called ahead with some sort of concern that perhaps my mixed children weren’t my children because they were unresponsive.”

“I wanted to go through the roof,”

he said, adding that he didn’t want to lose his temper in front of his kids. The police later interviewed his children and concluded that they were indeed his own, according to Harris. However, he mentioned that the American Airlines staff member did not offer any kind of compensation for the distressing encounter.

Harris suggested that if the flight attendant had concerns about the children’s relationship with him, she could have easily checked their shared last name or their linked Frequent Flyer accounts.

“There were many steps that she could have taken before she lobbed the hand grenade of having the authorities called,”

Harris said in a video. He described it as

    “completely poor form”

on the part of the airline.

An American Airlines representative later reached out to Harris after seeing his story on X, formally known as Twitter. He was offered 10,000 air miles, which he took but described as

    “kinda insulting”

    in a video.

“We strive to create a positive, welcoming environment for everyone who travels with us and apologize for any misunderstanding that may have occurred,”

an American Airlines spokesperson told Insider. It is unclear what repercussions were held against the flight attendant who reported Harris.

  • Teacher Arrested After Students Discover Methamphetamine In Her Hair Tie, Police Say

Teacher Arrested After Students Discover Methamphetamine In Her Hair Tie, Police Say

A middle school teacher in Indiana was arrested after students discovered methamphetamine hidden in her hair scrunchie, reports FOX News. Police also found a pouch of clean urine in her pants, which she had brought with her in anticipation of upcoming drug tests.

The incident occurred during a family fun night at Helfrich Park STEM Academy, where Sarah Duncan, a 35-year-old woman and parent of a student, was present. At the end of the event, around 6 p.m., Duncan took pictures with students in a photo booth, as noted in the affidavit.

“Both juveniles stated that Duncan let her hair down for the photo,”

    Evansville Police Department officers wrote.

“After the photo, the juveniles cleaned up the area and located a blueish-colored velvet-type scrunchie with a white zipper on the table. They noticed the scrunchie was heavier than a typical scrunchie, they opened the zipper pouch and observed a glass vial that contained a white powdered substance that the two believed to be drugs along with a cut straw with white powder.”

After the students discovered the methamphetamine in the hair scrunchie, they immediately informed another teacher who advised them to throw it away. This teacher secured the scrunchie in her classroom and informed the principal and assistant principal. On the other hand, two janitors reported that after the event, Duncan was seen desperately searching for a hair tie.

Police tested the scrunchie which reportedly tested positive for methamphetamine. Two days later, Duncan went to a clinic for a drug urine screening accompanied by the school’s deputy chief of staff and the police chief. However, her first two urine samples were too small and did not reach the appropriate temperature for testing. Duncan claimed to be clueless about why this was happening. During her third attempt, officers witnessed an unauthorized collection container fall from her shorts.

“Duncan stated that she was not aware of the pouch/container in her shorts until after she was providing her second sample,”

    police wrote in their affidavit.

Duncan was arrested and taken to Vanderburgh County Jail on charges of criminal possession and possession of drug paraphernalia. She has since been released on a $1,000 bond, with the condition that she attends a drug rehab program, according to the court clerk at Vanderburgh Superior Court who spoke to Fox News Digital.

  • Tragic Incident Unfolds as Daughter Responds Violently to Academic Pressure, Resulting in Fatal Consequences

Tragic Incident Unfolds as Daughter Responds Violently to Academic Pressure, Resulting in Fatal Consequences

A young woman identified as Sydney Powell, of Ohio was found guilty of brutally attacking her mother, Brenda Powell, with a frying pan and stabbing her multiple times, reports FOX News

Last week, prosecutors linked Sydney’s academic struggles to the tragic crime, securing her conviction for murder and assault. She was convicted on two counts of murder, felonious assault, and tampering with evidence.

Following her arraignment, Sydney, 23 had been out on bail, but that quickly changed as the jury delivered a guilty verdict in Summit County Common Pleas Court. Sydney could be seen bursting into tears before being taken into custody.

“We are disappointed with the jury’s verdict. We felt that the science overwhelmingly proved insanity, and we will file an appeal,”

Sydney’s attorney, Donald Malarcik, told Fox News Digital.

On March 3, 2020, the prosecution revealed that Sydney’s father confronted Brenda due to issues accessing Sydney’s tuition payment. The 19-year-old confessed hiding her expulsion from Mount Union University for months. The teen reportedly received failing grades in December 2019 and continued campus life until eviction from her dorm on February 24, 2020.

To avoid telling her parents, Sydney stayed in hotels for a week. Brenda returned home from her job to have a conversation with her daughter. During the discussion, school officials testified that they could hear thuds, screaming, and then the phone call abruptly ended. Concerned, one of the officials attempted to call back, only to have Sydney answer, pretending to be her mother. However, the official was not convinced and promptly contacted the police.

According to prosecutors, Sydney repeatedly struck her mother in the head with a cast-iron skillet before retrieving a steak knife and stabbing her approximately 30 times. This shocking act of violence forever altered the lives of the Powell family.

“She had to switch weapons and keep attacking her,”

assistant prosecutor Brian Stano told jurors.

“That is purposeful. That is trying to end someone.”

  • Chris Brown Faces $2 Million Lawsuit Over Unpaid Popeyes Restaurant Loan, Reports Say

Chris Brown Faces $2 Million Lawsuit Over Unpaid Popeyes Restaurant Loan, Reports Say

Singer Chris Brown is currently entangled in a legal battle after being sued for allegedly failing to repay a $2 million loan obtained from City National Bank (CNB) to invest in two ‘Popeyes‘ chicken restaurant locations, per Hip Hop DX

The lawsuit, which originated in Georgia but was filed in Los Angeles due to Brown’s residency, reveals that CNB provided the loan to Brown and other parties, including singer-songwriter The Dream, to acquire ownership in the fast-food establishments.

Although Brown and The Dream are not personally involved in the day-to-day operations of the restaurants, they are part of an investment group associated with the purchase. CNB states that the loan was granted in 2018 and attempts to collect repayment were made in subsequent years. As of February 17, 2023, the outstanding principal and interest on the loan amount to $2,140,901.74, according to the bank.

The bank emphasizes that Brown is personally liable for the loan as a guarantor. Unfortunately for Brown, the bank has already secured a judgment in their favor in a Georgia court, making the Los Angeles case an effort to enforce the previously won lawsuit. Specifically, CNB claims that Brown is responsible for $1,314,367.40.

It is important to note that the success of the ‘Popeyes’ restaurants remains uncertain, but CNB is determined to recover its loan. It is worth mentioning that Chris Brown already owns fourteen Burger King restaurants in Virginia, his home state. With an estimated net worth ranging from $50 million to $150 million, Brown’s financial situation may not be severely impacted by this lawsuit.

The Dream, who is also involved in the investment, may face a similar situation, although it is unclear if the bank intends to pursue legal action against him. Should Brown decide not to settle the debt, he will likely face a protracted legal battle ahead.

  • President Biden Faces Backlash For Referring To Rapper LL Cool J As ‘Boy’ During Speech At The Congressional Black Caucus

President Biden Faces Backlash For Referring To Rapper LL Cool J As ‘Boy’ During Speech At The Congressional Black Caucus

President Biden mistakenly mispronounced LL Cool J‘s name and shortly after referred to him as

    “boy”

during his speech at the Congressional Black Caucus on Saturday night, reports the NY Post

LL Cool J, whose real name is James Todd Smith, along with MC Lyte, was honored with the Phoenix Award for their significant musical contributions at the annual awards dinner in Washington, D.C. during the CBC’s 52nd Annual Legislative Conference.

“Two of the great artists of our time representing the groundbreaking legacy of hip hop in America, LL Jay Cool J, uhhh…”

he said as the crowd laughed at his mistake.

“By the way that boy — that man’s got biceps bigger than my thighs,”

Biden added. Ignoring his mistake, he immediately went on to acknowledge MC Lyte while the audience applauded.

As reported by The Post, the president has a track record of using the term

    “boy”

to refer to African Americans, which is widely recognized as a racial slur when used to describe black men. Earlier this year, Biden used this word when mentioning Wes Moore, the first black governor of Maryland. Additionally, the president has previously faced criticism during his campaign for using the same term to describe his ability to collaborate with segregationist senators, which sparked controversy.

Senator Cory Booker, a Democrat from New Jersey who was also running for president against Biden, expressed his disapproval of Biden’s actions in a statement.

“You don’t joke about calling black men ‘boys’,” he said.
