Florida School Pulls Disney’s ‘Ruby Bridges’ After Parent Filed Complaint, Claiming It Teaches ‘White People Hate Black People’

A Florida parent filed a formal complaint against her child’s elementary school for showing the Disney historical film on the story of Ruby Bridges, due to fears that it will influence students to believe that

    “White people hate Black people,”

    per PEOPLE

The biographical drama tells a story about a six-year-old girl who was chosen to integrate a Louisiana elementary school in 1960. North Shore Elementary School, which was showing the historic film in honor of Black History Month, sent notices home asking parents for permission for their children to watch the PG-rated film.

    “A standard protocol,”

Pinellas County Schools spokesperson told the outlet. The description to parents stated,

“Ruby’s heroic struggle for a better education becomes a lesson for us all.”

However, one parent, who reportedly declined to give her child permission, thought otherwise. The parent, citing several racial slurs and threatening comments heard in the film’s depiction of what Bridges withstood, filed the complaint saying that the film could teach the class that

    “White people hate Black people.”

The parent asked that Ruby Bridges be withdrawn from the list of films approved for elementary school students, saying it was

    “more appropriate for eighth-graders,”

PEOPLE reported. In a statement obtained by PEOPLE, the district spokesperson said that after the formal objection was filed, the parent was notified that

“the school would not have any future showings during this school year as the movie had already been shown.”

The film is now under review however, it has not been removed from all schools.

“The movie remains available through the district’s licensed movie library,”

the spokesperson said. The complaint comes as parents across Florida we’re given the right to regulate what their children are taught in public school education, lawfully recognized as The Parental Rights in Education Act.

  • South Carolina Store Offers Teenage Shoplifters A Job Instead of Pressing Charges

South Carolina Store Offers Teenage Shoplifters A Job Instead of Pressing Charges

A South Carolina store is taking a positive approach to curbing teenage shoplifters. According to the NY Post, the President of Palmetto Moon in Haywood Mall chose to hire two teenage boys who went stealing in the store instead of pressing charges.

Palmetto Moon president Amber Dube took the opportunity to teach two teenage boys a life lesson after they were caught stealing from her store on March 13.

“I think this is a situation where teenagers do stupid things, and we know that,”

    Dube told FOX Carolina.

Dube said she worked closely with the teen’s parents to come up with alternatives for them to pay their debt. As a result, the boys will work for Palmetto Moon.

“So I think it’s important for us to think about what they did and really judge on the merits of who they are and what they can contribute back to the community,”

    she said.

The boys reportedly apologized and returned the stolen items to the store. Dube said her goal is to teach the kids how hard employees work to prepare the store for customers.

“We wanted to make sure that they learned a lesson, and they were held accountable for their actions, and felt that this was the best way for them to learn their lesson and also to give back to the community.”

The earnings that they receive from working at the store will be donated to the Greenville Police Department, according to the Post. They will also do volunteer hours for the company.

“I’m hoping that this message is really resonating with the community to say, we’re all in this together, and we can make our communities much better and more positive,”

    Dube said.

  • Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, and Other Brands Accused of Buying Clothes from a California ‘Sweatshop’ That Pays Workers $1.58 an Hour

Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, and Other Brands Accused of Buying Clothes from a California ‘Sweatshop’ That Pays Workers $1.58 an Hour

The Department of Labor is cracking down on U.S. clothing manufacturers who are accused of paying their workers $1.58 an hour for making clothes for brands like Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, and more, Insider reported.

According to a report published by the outlet, federal investigators found out that 80% of contractors and manufacturers in Southern California were

“breaking one or more provisions of US labor law.”

Some are accused of falsifying their payroll records while some had no documentation at all.

The department said one manufacturer who makes clothes for Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Stitch Fix, and Von Maur, was paying their workers an hourly rate of just $1.58. In 2021 California banned

    “piece rate wages,”

where employees are paid based on how much they produce, however, the Department of Labor says it’s still a big issue.

“Despite our efforts to hold Southern California’s garment industry employers accountable, we continue to see people who make clothes sold by some of the nation’s leading retailers working in sweatshops,”

Ruben Rosalez, part of the department’s wage and hour division, said in a statement.

“Many people shopping for clothes in stores and online are likely unaware that the ‘Made in the USA’ merchandise they’re buying was, in fact, made by people earning far less than the US law requires.”

  • 3 Men Posed as Fake Pastors and Financial Advisors, Making Nearly $28M in Ponzi Scheme

3 Men Posed as Fake Pastors and Financial Advisors, Making Nearly $28M in Ponzi Scheme

Three Maryland men who pretended to be pastors and financial advisors were sentenced Thursday after running a Ponzi scheme that brought in nearly $28 million, per Insider.

The men, John Erasmus Frimpong, Arley Ray Johnson, and Dennis Jali are accused of promoting a bogus financial literacy and wealth management firm named

    “1st Millions”

in August 2017, where they lied to investors about investing in forex and crypto ventures that would bring them a monthly return on investments as high as 35%, reports reveal.

    According to prosecutors, the men

“frequented churches, hotel galas, and upscale events to recruit at least 1,200 victims”

who reportedly coughed up millions of dollars to them. The men allegedly told their victims that they were licensed traders under the laws of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, reports state.

    The three men

“presented themselves as ‘pastors,’ and told prospective investors that 1st Million’s work was in furtherance of God’s mission in that it helped churches and their members achieve personal wealth and financial freedom,”

    prosecutors said in court documents.

The thieves reportedly used the money to maintain a lavish lifestyle. They are accused of staying in luxury hotels, with one making a $27,000 purchase on an Audi, $20,000 on a Porsche, and $78,000 on private jets. However, things started to get shaky for the men after their Bank of America account was hit with overdraft fees of over $100,000, reports reveal. The men had reportedly begun giving investors fake monthly return checks.

The scam started to fall apart during the spring of 2019 when Dennis Jali fled to South Africa. Jali is accused of attempting to get his identity expunged from the internet entirely. He was later arrested in South Africa, according to DOJ. John Erasmus Frimpong was sentenced to about 10 years in prison, and Arley Ray Johnson, was sentenced to six years on

“conspiracy to commit wire fraud, conspiracy to commit securities fraud, and securities fraud charges,”

reports reveal. Jali still awaits sentencing.

Five Staten Island boys, ages 11-12 years old, had to be rescued from the sewer system after climbing in and getting lost, Fox News reported.

According to the New York Fire Department (FDNY), 911 dispatchers got a call at around 6 p.m. from one of the boy’s cell phones. In the 911 call obtained by Fox News, the boys are heard telling officials they had entered a sewer and were stuck inside.

The 911 dispatcher had the boys describe their point of entry to help locate them. The boys explained that they had walked through a cemetery before entering the sewer and had been

    “walking a lot.”

Officials said the boys walked for 15 minutes under a roadway, passing multiple manhole covers, and through the parking lot of the Staten Island Zoo.

The dispatcher discovered that the boys had climbed into the sewer through the side of a local park, Clove Lakes Park. The children were told to scream

The boys could be heard yelling,

    “Help! Help! Help us!”

  • Contaminated Eye Drops Linked To 3 Deaths, 8 People with Vision Loss, and 4 Eyeball Removal Surgeries

Contaminated Eye Drops Linked To 3 Deaths, 8 People with Vision Loss, and 4 Eyeball Removal Surgeries

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has recalled several eye drop brands including EzriCare Artificial Tears after three people died, and four others had to undergo eyeball removal surgery because of a rare bacterial infection linked to the products, NBC News reported.

On Tuesday the CDC reported that 68 patients in 16 states have been infected by the contaminated eye drops. Earlier in the year the  CDC and U.S. Food and Drug Administration put out a warning against using EzriCare or Delsam Pharma’s Artificial Tears products. However, most patients said they began using the products and started seeing side effects before the recall, a CDC spokesperson wrote in a statement to NBC.

The products were reportedly manufactured in India by a company named Global Pharma Healthcare, according to USA Today. They have identified the bacteria as Pseudomonas aeruginosa which is an antibiotic-resistant bacteria, meaning the bacteria can survive or even multiply despite the use of medication.

There have been reportedly three fatalities, eight patients have lost vision in at least one of their eyes, and some have had to get their eyeballs surgically removed, the CDC said. Healthcare providers are urging people who have used the recalled products to seek immediate care and warn others who utilize artificial tears to check the labels and expiration dates before using them.

“Before putting eye drops in, everyone should double check the bottle’s label to be certain it isn’t one of these recalled products. But at this time there is no concern with using other eye drops,”

Dr. Christopher Starr, clinical spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology, told USA Today.
