  • NYC Sues Companies Accused Of Using Candy-Flavored Vapes To Attract Child Consumers

NYC Sues Companies Accused Of Using Candy-Flavored Vapes To Attract Child Consumers

New York City is filing another lawsuit to put a stop to companies selling illegal flavored vapes to kids, as reported by the NY Post. Mayor Eric Adams said during a public safety briefing in City Hall.

“Price Point’s greed has been pushing nicotine on our kids for too long and today we say no more.”

The latest lawsuit is against Price Point Distributors Inc., a company based out of

Long Island. Its goal is to stop the company from selling their products and also demands an unspecified amount of money for damages and fines.

“We will not sit idly by as they continue to harm our kids, and we will not tolerate crime and disorder of this magnitude, which includes illegal sales of drugs, vapes, and other illegal cannabis products.”

After recognizing the risks of this addictive product, Mayor Bill de Blasio signed a law in 2020 to ban the sale of flavored vaping products in all five boroughs. In July 2023, the Adams administration filed a federal lawsuit against four big distributors, and in April 2024, they announced a second lawsuit against 11 local wholesalers. Both cases are still ongoing.

“By selling disposable vapes with kid-friendly flavors — such as cotton candy, raspberry watermelon, and cherry cola — defendants are putting profit before the wellbeing of young people,”

the city’s acting corporation counsel, Muriel Goode-Trufant pointed out.

Adams mentioned that they working closely with the city Department of Education to tackle this problem. Mark Rampersant, the Security Director of the DOE, said that they have nearly 300 counselors helping students who are addicted to these products and plan to actively educate young people about the dangers.

“We’re also providing counseling, support services, and counseling to our parents as well,”

    Rampersant said.

According to The National Youth Tobacco Survey,

“e-cigarettes remain the ‘most popular products’ among teenagers.”

Woman Who Pepper Sprayed A Muslim Uber Driver For No Reason Charged With Hate Crime

A young woman was indicted for a hate crime after she pepper-sprayed a Muslim Uber driver in Manhattan during the summer, the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office said, per NY Post

Jennifer Guilbeault, 23, was charged in New York State Supreme Court with two counts of assault as a hate crime and aggravated harassment for the unprovoked attack, which happened without on July 31. The incident took place near Lexington Avenue and East 66th Street, as stated by Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg.

The driver, Shohel Mahmud, later said that Guilbeault attacked him because of his skin color.

“Her friend, she is yelling, ‘Jen, Jen, what the f–k, what are you doing? What’s going on?’”

Mahmud told The Post days after the attack.

“Her friend is asking ‘Why did you do that?’ And she say, ‘He’s brown.’”

Guilbeault was sitting in the backseat with another woman around 12:15 a.m. when she suddenly sprayed the harmful substance in the 45-year-old driver’s eyes, as shown in videos shared on social media. The driver, Mahmud, said he hadn’t talked to the women when he picked them up in Midtown. Bragg mentioned that Guilbeault attacked the driver when he started praying in Arabic as they approached a red light.

At the time Mahmud believed the women were trying to rob him and jumped out of the car. When the car started moving slowly without him, he got back inside, and Guilbeault sprayed him again. Police arrested Guilbeault at the scene but initially only gave her a ticket. Her lawyer argued that the incident shouldn’t be considered a hate crime.

“Ms. Guilbeault was not motivated by race, religion, national origin, or any other discriminatory factor,”

Michael J. Alber said in a statement. Her next court date is scheduled for January 13.

  • PTA President Allegedly Stole $40K From NYC Elementary School, Spent It On Amazon and Vet Bills

PTA President Allegedly Stole $40K From NYC Elementary School, Spent It On Amazon and Vet Bills

The PTA president at a school in Queens is accused of pocketing over $40,000 that was meant for children’s programs and using it for personal expenses like vet bills, Amazon shopping, and Uber Eats, as reported by The Post.

Athena Gonzalez stepped down from her position on September 27 after other PTA members at PS 166 in Astoria claimed she stole the money. The interim president shared this news at a meeting on October 7. The PTA’s secretary found out about the missing funds after noticing fraudulent bank activity. PTA members were first informed about the issue during an emergency meeting on September 27.

    Uncovering The Scandal

During the meeting, a $10,000 check made out to cash was placed on the table, but no one claimed to have written it, sources say. Another check was reportedly made out to Gonzalez, as mentioned by the PTA during a meeting in October. Members worked together to track the charges and found that Gonzalez used the majority of the funds over the summer, charging them to the PTA credit card.

They discovered that some of the charges went to her vet and noted that she had been sharing posts on social media about her recent vacations and a new car. The PTA members reported their findings to the principal and the NYPD. According to the treasurer’s report, the PTA had $64,817 in June, but by September, the balance had dropped to $12,564.

Gonzalez became the PTA president in June 2023. The PTA told the police about unauthorized transactions on their business account from December 11, 2023, to September 23 of this year, according to an NYPD spokesperson. No arrests have been made, and the investigation is still ongoing. As a result, the PTA’s bank accounts are frozen, and some upcoming events for kids have been postponed or canceled.

Bus Driver Hailed A Hero After Spotting Five-Year-Old Girl Walking Alone Down New York City Street

An MTA bus driver is being hailed a hero after he saw a little girl walking alone in New York City, per Daily Mail. Luis Jimenez, 60, was finishing his morning shift when he noticed a five-year-old girl walking by herself on the sidewalk near 160th and Broadway on Tuesday afternoon.

“We have a saying in the MTA – if you see something, say something,”

Jimenez told ABC 7. The Harlem native watched the little girl through his front window for about a block before he pulling over. He called his dispatcher and asked a passenger to dial 911.

With help from the other passengers, Jimenez managed to get the little girl, who still had her school bag, safely onto the bus. Her school had reported her missing because she didn’t show up for class. The young girl has never gone missing, reports state. However, that day she decided to skip out on school to go to the pet store. The little girl’s fish had recently died, and she was trying to find a new pet to replace it, reports reveal.

She had already walked ten blocks away from her school when Jimenez noticed her. It so happened that Jimenez was supposed to call out of work sick that morning. His fatherly instincts kicked in, and he was able to make sure the child got back to her family safely.

“My instinct as a father came on because if I see a kid in the street in need of help, I would want somebody to help one of my children or one of my grandkids,”

    he said.

  • Former Aide To Eric Adams Faces Charges For Witness Tampering and Destroying Evidence

Former Aide To Eric Adams Faces Charges For Witness Tampering and Destroying Evidence

A former New York City official was charged on Tuesday with witness tampering and destroying evidence in a federal investigation linked to Mayor Eric Adams’ bribery case, as reported by Huff Post. This arrest happened as more notable figures left Adams’ administration.

Federal prosecutors say that Mohamed Bahi, who stepped down as a community affairs liaison on Monday, told a businessman and campaign donors to lie to the FBI back in June. They also claim he deleted the encrypted messaging app Signal from his phone just as FBI agents were about to search his home in July. Prosecutors noted that Bahi had used this app to communicate with Adams.

In a statement following Bahi’s arrest, U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said,

“The charges unsealed today should leave no doubt about the seriousness of any effort to interfere with a federal investigation, particularly when undertaken by a government employee.”

“Our commitment to uncovering the truth and following the facts wherever they may lead is unwavering,”

    Williams added.

Bahi, 40, from Staten Island, is the first person charged in the investigation besides Mayor Adams. Over six of the mayor’s top aides have resigned due to recent searches and subpoenas. Bahi was arrested on Tuesday and will appear in federal court in Manhattan. The first to resign was Deputy Mayor Sheena Wright on Monday, following her husband, the schools chancellor, and her brother-in-law, the deputy mayor for public safety.

The police commissioner and a senior advisor also stepped down from their position. All five deny any wrongdoing. Mayor Adams plans to stay in office after pleading not guilty on September 27 to charges of accepting about $100,000 in free or discounted travel, hotel stays, meals, and seeking illegal donations from foreign sources. He is also charged with accepting illegal donations from Turkish nationals and hiding the money by routing them through U.S. citizens.

  • Public Outcry After $620K in Damages: Should NYC Ban Central Park Music Festival?

Public Outcry After $620K in Damages: Should NYC Ban Central Park Music Festival?

Despite being a tourist attraction there’s an outcry to ban the Central Park festival due to the $620K damages incurred. According to Gale Brewer, a member of the City Council, the city must restrict the organizers from future concerts. Brewer tells Mayor Eric Adam that the one-day event causes New York to lose money. Via a letter sent out on October 3, the in-house politician explained that the event was inconvenient for the city. Brewer cited the hindrance of traffic flow and noise pollution in the Park’s Green Lawn. The Central Park Music Festival also makes it impossible for regular residents to visit the park.

Lawmaker Calls For Central Park Festival Ban After $620K Damages

Back in September, the Global Citizen Festival was hosted at Central Park. For the 12th installation of this event, over 60,000 people were gathered. Expectedly, the post-summer weather made way for light showers. Still, the crowd seemed happy as they chimed in support of their favorite artist. The event hosted by Hugh Jackman saw Benson Boone, Kelly Roll, and Raye perform.

NYC Post reports that before the city hosted guest stars at the festival, the area was slightly locked down. According to Brewer residents and visitors barely enjoyed their space. This was because of the setup and the obstruction of the free flow of foot traffic. In his defense, it isn’t worth it especially considering the city’s loss. Just last year the city also witnessed the same obstructions as it was a rainy day also. Additionally, sources claimed that the Central Park festival left the park in ruins racking up to $622,000 in damages.

Following the damage done to the park, the board of directors for the event sorted the bills. After this was sorted, the conservancy maintained that they would work with the city’s Park Department. This connection would minimize repair issues when concerts are held on rainy days.

For now, it hasn’t been reported whether the park would be needing repairs. But a rep for the park claimed that the damages are expected to be low compared to last year. However, this is the second time in a row that it would rain during a Central Park festival.
